Simply..the study....

Maybe i should have stopped at having all the books in the one room, all on the shelves, and only one deep, but my other aim was that they should be easy for find, so it was logical to try to organise them into categories as after all the shuffling around I couldn't be sure of finding anything!

But I have to say it's quite exciting. I love our books and it is becoming easier to know which spark joy so the giveaway pile in the hall is getting higher and higher...

It's taking hours and hours but it's becoming a room I want to be in, and work in. I am so lucky to have the space.

Does anyone still use the lovely old reference books which have been a much loved and much used part of our book collections for so long?

My husband has his dog-earred reference books in every room..he loves them! Freda...it is delightful to see a glimpse of your study...i enjoy having a clearer picture of your home. And thank you for the link to Lotta's stunning poem. I intend to forward it to my friends.

' it's becoming a room I want to be in, and work in.' That's a great reward for the hours it takes to organise your books into categories.

I found organising my books into categories/collections made it so much easier to part with quite a few and hopefully once unpacking them I will also find it easier to know which spark joy.

Is your study a room with a view?

It is feeling worth the effort Cath. This room looks onto the yellow gate in the front garden, and the forest. It's the window with the clematis around it. More photos soon!

That's a mammoth task but the study must feel so alive, no wonder you want to be in there! I'm intrigued by the ballooning book - is it the history of, or just full of visual delight? Have you been up in one? It's something I've always wanted to do - surprisingly no-one else I know seems keen though, so I shall go by myself!

Love your book collection. What a huge, but lovely task. Must admit I still hold on to my reference books, including my beloved 2 volume OED (with magnifying glass) and an old, huge National Geographic Book of World Map. The binding and pages of the latter are so tattered and it is old enough to label countries as the Belgian Congo and Rhodesia, etc.. I poured over its pages with my children when they were young, so much so that they are probably among the few Americans who actually know something about geography.

Most of my books are reference books of one kind or another - love them (but do tend to use Google of course.) Should I hang on to them I wonder in case the internet goes pear-shaped? Just kidding but...

HEllo Freda, having read this have decided to tackle the study (which doubles as guest bedroom.) Sadly not the only room in th house to have books. IN every other room as well apart from the bathroom. I do have them in categories but going to have a cull. WAtch out for some space. HOpefully!

Elizabeth...i would not say "sadly", if i came to your house and found books in every room...we all have to find our own click point of what makes us happy in our own homes...but personally, i love browsing and see what someone else has been of interest to my hosts. It's a little window into who they are...:-)

Thanks Julia, I have always loved books, and liked browsing those in other homes too. But suddenly I feel they are about who I was rather than who am am now. I will save th things I have absolutely loved and those I think I might possibly re-read , but if I continue to hoard my home will come to a stand still. Finding it so hard

I do agree with Julia about everyone's click point being different. I tried asking 'Would I buy this today' and found I had a catefory I called 'gathering dust' both these helped with the major cull - it feels so good and is certainly more about who I am now. Go to it Elizabeth! Another point is if you really miss something it is very easy today to find another copy...
