..in books (and there are lots of them!) Here are some I have read...

And here is the one I think best so far...

Though a bit old fashioned (it was written in 1960) and full of generalisations about the character of the Venetian (which is one of the reasons it seems old fashioned) it is still in this 1993 revision an excellent and enjoyable read. The foreword to this edition, in which the author justifies not making many changes, is a delightful read in itself.

To be read slowly, and savoured.

Some others I have are in this post.

how exciting! and it is marvelous to see how you are preparing yourself....:-) you will have all the richer experience for it......on a light note...one book that seems to be missing from your list is portugese irregular verbs by alexander mccall smith....i listened to the audio version and it was "laugh-out-loud" funny! ..if i remember correctly, the main character visits venice with hilarious consequences.

I am enjoying it all so much Julia. Thank you for the recommendation - I have not heard of it and will look it up!

I second the McCall-Smith - there are four of those, I believe, and they're wonderful (the audiobooks are beautifully read by Hugh Laurie!).
What about the fantastic Donna Leon Commissario Brunetti series - I do hope you're familiar with those?! Interestingly, they are not available in Italian, but very popular in English and German...

Have ordered the audio book , but detective novels have never been my thing....

You might like to try these - they are not blood or gore or centred on crime, but a great portrait of Venice and the Venetian mentality, good food, real life (and true Italian corruption!)... Brunetti and his wife seem to be good "people" - and Donna Leon herself is an interesting woman of international experience!

The Brodsky essay whispers "read me". Possibly because I like its title so much. (and the Penguin Modern Classics).

I always love to read books about where I am going. You can learn so much more about a location. There must be so many about Venice. The book you recommend looks a good read even if we aren't visiting Venice! Sarah x
