....and sleet, and hailstones, (sunshine today Yay!) but I am still walking most days.

I am lucky to have some very beautiful places to walk.

This forest walk starts at the Schoolhouse Burn. From there it's fairly steep going..(good for the heart!)....

to the Laird's Grave, from where on Thursday I took the next shot, which I've used as the new banner photograph.

I sheltered under the yew trees from the hail, and waited till the light struck the snow. Dramatic and beautiful is Creachan Mor in the snow. The mountain - the name means great stony hill - is 2156 feet high. We see it across the bay from the windows of the house. The lower slopes are oak and birch woodland which colour up beautifully in autumn.

I shall take more photographs of the lovely walks around - it will be an added incentive to keep walking!

Do any of you use a pedometer? 10,000 steps a day is the recommended target?

10,000 steps seems a lot to me! Your walk is beautiful, such views. My walking has tailed off in favour of gardening - I can't seem to be able to do both.

If your steps average about half a metre, 10,000 would be 5km, not so far? But every day?
I'd rather spend the time painting from those lovely photographs.I don't know how you can resist.

I have and use a pedometer for the third year now. Rather than doing a 10.000 steps each day, would be difficult anyway, as my health fluctuates and with it my energy, I have made a chart and keep track of distance walked each day. My pedometer converts also to kilometers and miles. My chart collects distances each month, so I can compare now to last year and the year before. I prefer comparing myself with myself in this way. Oh yes, and I only use it on my daily walk. Not indoors or when going out. How beautiful your walk is.

How lovely!
Here we had hail and now wet snow - not really fair compensation for the lack of winter… :( brrr

We used a pedometer to measure our common walks for a time so know which ones are 2000, 5000 or 10000 and keep it at the back of our minds when thinking about how much exercise we've been getting (or not!).

hi freda, i use a "fitbit one"...it does all those fancy calculations, like calories burned, staircases climbed, miles walked steps taken. when i first got it, i was gung ho to get in my 10,000 steps daily, and yes, i did lose weight. now i wear it daily as a reminder of what i am actually doing, and many days i do get in those 10,000 steps, sometimes even without going for a walk. i find it useful as a prompt to get off the couch, where i can be found most days, reading a favorite book!..:-) life is too short to seek perfect performance in everything! i need to rest and enjoy...

Gosh, I'm impressed you get to 10,000 without going for a walk! I do agree about 'perfect' - life is too short.

I aim to walk briskly (3.5mph - 4.5mph) for at least an hour every day. If we walk on the forest roads we reckon that qualifies as "cross country hiking" which uses up more calories than simple road walking - but then, I'm working on weight-loss rather than mere fitness. I was pretty fit despite being 1.5 stones heavier than I am now! In answer to your question: my pedometer broke and didn't seem to be registering all my steps anyway, so I decided timing and maintaining a decent pace was simpler ...
