Absolutely, a lot can be achieved without government! We can do a lot in our own lives, and teach and inspire others ( particularly those of us who work with children and teenagers). Many of my piano students have asked their parents for refillable fountain pens after seeing me using them, for example.
Aside from food waste, the big issue that worries me is plastic, and I have come to the realisation that we can try to tackle it on the home front but I need to be more active in writing to companies and asking them to change their packaging. I have had some positive responses about this issue, and in some cases my letters have been ignored or the receiver has claimed that customers want their moisturiser or whatever in more convenient plastic. This means more of us need to express ourselves - for each letter received, companies know that usually 100 other people feel the same but haven't made the effort to write.
Well done Madeleine - we do need to speak up!
It absolutely can. What an inspiring woman! And well done to Denmark for listening. (I see she's done a couple of TEDx talks too.) I'm going to ask my two local organic/wholefoods shops if they might consider selling some products in the same way as the Zero Waste shop. I know they buy a lot of things in bulk and package them on the premises - it would save them the extra work!
A good move Lotta - zero waste shops will spread I hope.
I will continue to recycle, buy 2nd hand, and encourage companies to use less packaging, regardless of presidents, gov'ts, and non binding accords
yes indeed, to this fantastic woman..i am so happy to know about her. and yes, also, to zero-waste efforts and less plastic, and repurposing..as everyone above mentions...we ARE changing the world, one person at a time..when they see our behavior.
