Simply..what can I say?

This morning's news that our iconic and much loved Glasgow School of Art has again been devastated by fire finds me in shock. I know many of the people involved in the restoration work after the fire four years ago, which was going so very well.  I feel for them today.

Add to that that it is pouring with rain for today's Open Day in the garden as the poor plants flattened by storm Hector try to raise their heads from the ground....

My sister is coming to stay and tonight I dine out with dear friends who helped with the garden.

What can I say, except that I hope you are all having a better weekend?!

Freda, I'd already left a message on your previous post about this. I feel so sorry for everyone connected with that building, and all that restoration work, and cost! Glad you'll have company.

Thanks for your comments Linda. The work was of such a high standard - all that skill and care and money. I am glad to have company tonight!

I was extremely sad to wake up to this news about the art school. I'm so sorry that the weather has scuppered your open day after all that hard work, Freda. Thank goodness for family and friends! x

And blog friends Grace. Makes all the difference doesn't it - to have the support of lovely people when you need it.

Thought of you the minute I saw the art school news. Can only guess at how devastated you must feel. Your work in the sunshine to get the garden ready has already been a memorial to Barry. Those of us who won't be able to visit you this weekend have really enjoyed the photos. You've opened your garden to beyond those who come through the gate. Hugs.

Like Mary I thought of you as soon as I read the news this morning. It is so very sad. Much the same as storms in June. Make sure to have a lovely evening Freda, in defiance of Hector! x

The news is simply unbelievable, Freda..and for many of your readers, including me, who were following your posts at the time of the last fire, another shock for our dear Freda! My heart goes out to you. I am glad you will be with friends and family who love you. I do hope you had some visitors to your garden..the amazing thing about nature, and your garden, is that it WILL come back...can you take some strength in nature just now? Warm hugs to you! And to all the people of Glasgow too.

Over the past years I've been following the renovation work through occasional newsletters. It is hard to believe all that dedication and skill gone once again and horrible to see how much damage this fire has done to the beautiful building.

I can very well understand how this comes as a shock to you. and makes you sad. Good to know you are in the company of family and friends tonight.

Oh that company was so welcome and of course we all talked of the fire...your company here is always welcome too Cath. Thank you.

I could hardly believe the news and thought it was a recap on the original fire perhaps.
Your garden has reached so many people through your blog. We visited NGS gardens in a group opening today but thought of you all the while. I hope the rain eased for the late afternoon and that you will enjoy a well earned rest this evening with family and friends. X

I am so touched at the idea of you visiting another garden and thinking of me in mine Lucille. It went well in spite of the weather and the evening was lovely - I am so lucky to have wonderful people in my life and on my blog.

Away from home, but just read the news about the school. Like others have said, my first thought was of you. I can only imagine the heartbreak you felt on seeing the news, not just for yourself, but as you say for all those who have worked so hard on the restoration from the last fire.

As for your lovely garden, rain or shine, the beauty of the work and the love behind it will show.

Glad your sister and friends are with you. ..as all of your blog friends are, if only in spirit. XO

The way people come together in the face of disasters like this is deeply moving. Thankful no-one was hurt but still finding it hard to believe. Thank you Mary. (I do think the garden looks loved again.)

I immediately thought of you last night when I read about the fire. What a dreadful thing to have happened. I also thought of you when I went for my walk here in Dorset ,this morning, and it was decidedly grey and nippy. I was so hoping you would have had the opposite weather in the opposite end of the country. Never mind, I hope the opening was as successful as it could have been. Penny x

It was Penny though we will have raised a lot less money than usual for the charities. Lots of happy people though!

What a tragedy - I felt instant shock, then disbelief and thought I might wake up and it would be a dream - but sadly not. You must be feeling so sad and down by the news and to add to this all your hard work that has gone into your garden over the past weeks spoilt in an instant with the adverse weather and after such a long sunny, dry spell - life can be so cruel at times, but both will spring back eventually.
Not even the weather can take away the beauty of your garden and the love and care you give to it.
Holding you in my thoughts x

Thank you Viv. What a strange few days it has been but you are right - after a little rest all will be well again.

What a shock for everyone who knows and loves that building... just unbelievable it could happen again. I hope your evening with friends and family helped ease the shock Freda and that you had some hardy garden visitors yesterday too. Maybe you could all do a 'pop up' open gardens sometime in better weather to help raise money for GSA? x
