Simply..whiter and yet whiter....

I love white. It lifts my sprits. Maybe that is why I love snow.

I have always painted the walls of my rooms white and when I walk into a 'white cube' style art gallery - the bigger the better - I feel as if I am floating a couple of inches off the ground!

Reading Spark Joy, I was prompted to dig out a simple quilted white bedspread and put it over the dark leather sofa - immediate spark of joy...(photographed in the evening - even sparkier in daylight!)

Picture
The books I mentioned yesterday are At Home With White by Atlanta Bartlett and Sensual Home by Ilse Crawford which has thoughtful text, beautiful photographs and these chapter headings -

harmony
balance
peace
comfort
texture
space
proportion
energy
spirit
light
shade
sustenance
love

These rwo books are keepers for me, but we change, and our tastes change, and one of the lovely things about clearing is we make room for the new....

Is there a colour which inspires you?

And is there a book about it?

We are back to rainy weather here, but I think I'll keep my snowy header photograph for a few days more....

I agree with your thoughts on white, but for me it's too cold for my home. I prefer colour - muted red and green and gold - to make me feel warm and cosy.

Isn't it funny how very different we all are? Warm and dark colours make me feel suffocated! I wonder what influences our preferences...

Did you find there's a difference in daylight? The quilted bedspread: beauty (and the floor), the tulips: energy, the whole: in balance.

The walls in our apartment are white too, and some furniture and soft furnishments. Main colour is sand, with the exception of one red chair. Could I start from scratch again without financial limitations I would be true to Shaker style with much empty space and only whites and browns.
I have a folder with some articles including photographs which I look at every now and then. No book.

Both your books I can obtain through ILL. Do you have a suggestion with which one to start?

Oh entirely different by daylight! More forgiving by lamplight.. I'd recommend Sensual Home, but from the library - I have just read Lotta's comment! Shaker style is lovely.

I do like the white look very much, as long as it's tempered by texture and not too stark, but find that cream works better with the light oak floor and built-ins in my living/dining/kitchen area, on the whole (my bedroom is white, except the blanket). However, I do love colour and there is always some red (probably more than less!), to which a bit of golden yellow and green have added themselves... I find that the places I've lived in have dictated what works and what does not, e.g. I have not been able to use blue or turquoise in this house, they are simply not happy...
Funnily enough, when I was growing up and lived in rentals, it really frustrated me that everything was white and neutral but now I could paint any colour I please, I don't want to any more!

Ah, we change! I do agree that the house somewhat dictates what will work. It is lovely to be sensitive to that.

My decorating colors are #1 yellow, then green, and then red....our current home has more green than we have ever had...it's been 12 years and to me, the rooms feel as fresh and timeless as they did 12 years ago....i love the way a green or yellow room invites the outdoors in.....

I love that link between outdoors and in - that is really special.

I love white too, but white tends to look too grey (and a bit depressing) in my house so I've had to opt for other very light colours instead. Although who knows, white might work when I've kondoed completely! I adore colour and need it around me in various forms - that's what lifts my spirits - cool or warm as long as it's either peaceful or vibrant, nothing dark and heavy.
Did you know that Sensual Home is available on Amazon 'used' from £27.50 up to £324.76 and 'new' from £1995.40 !!! What?!!

The book is special - but not that special!! Mad. I adore colour too and maybe the white is for me the best setting for it...

I do love white walls, and use all shades of blue and teal in the accessories. That's an amazing price on amazon for the book! Sarah x
