The small but wonderful shetland Taxtile Museum was a delight., and the Facebok page on their very good website has some great videos.

Much of the land is is covered in a carpet of green close cropped by 284,831 sheep! (Sheland in Statistics 2017) and the skill of the knitters is known the world over of course.

The colours and intricacy of the patterns are mind boggling to me as someone who finds two plain, two purl rib stretching. Looking at pieces of work like that I can't help but think of the hours of someone's life that went into their creation. It is wonderful that there is a place to display so many examples of such fine craft work. Will investigate the website and thank you for the great photographs, Freda.

Wonderful textiles ! Shetland knitting is fascinating. Do you know they still teach such handwork skills to the school children.....the peerie makkers I think they call them?! And the contrast between the styles in your photos and the Shetland lace wedding ring shawls. They make my knitting skills seem very puny !

There are some young contemporary designers too. It’s great that it’s all still so active. My mother knitted shawl grandchildren that could go through wedding ring. Must for today if it for you at some point.
