Glasgow University's Hunterian Museum has the most astonishing display about The Antonine Wall, built by the Romans in about 142AD. I found the lettering on these stones very beautiful, and very beautifully displayed in this permanent exhibition.

Making something on the beach or in a park or a wood with what is already there is fun, and creative. I sometimes make 'North Points' (essentially arrows pointing to the north) when on holiday or out on a walk. This is part of one. Sometimes if you go back to one you find that someone has added to it. Simple fun.. If you know Julia Cameron's book The Artist's Way you will know about artist dates. Artist dates are a way of filling the well (see 27 Sept).
The idea is that once a week you set aside time to do something just for your creative self, and just for fun, something that will get your creative juices flowing. It can be cultural fun, or lighthearted play. Done on a whim or planned in advance. Adventurous or quietly relaxing. But, Cameron advises, it should be done on your own. Going to Edinburgh on a whim was an artist date for me. Writing in the sand with a stick and watching the tide wash it away is another favourite. Buying some new pens and sketching or doodling, walking around a junk store or a different neighbourhood....It's up to you to decide what will refresh and interest you. Give it a try this week? Actually it wasn't all that simple, but it seemed silly that the photograph at the top of the blog was the only one not taken by me! (But I rather liked the way there was a little pause before those jolly sunflowers popped up - did you notice this?)
So now it's my blue sheets on the washing line....hmmm. Is this a good image for living simply? Expect some changes. It's a bit dark by the hedge, but I am going on a one day photography course next week, so maybe I'll find out how to improve it. I have to confess to being very hit and miss as a photographer. I use Windows Photo Gallery but am going to learn how to use Adobe Photoshop. Here is the website of Andrea Jones who is running the course. She is the photographer who took the garden photos for the SGS and the magazines. I'm really looking forward to it as she is a brilliant photographer (and a very nice person). www.andreajones.co.uk |
