We can send spaceships to Mars but we can't have Christmas lights that last from one year to the next!! Plugged in. switched on - nothing. I summoned all my patience and read the instructions for changing the bulbs - they assumed that some were working so didn't quite make sense.. Brought them downstairs and put on some music expecting this to be a long process, plugged in, switched on and Lo! Are your lights working?

We must assume from this that patience and music are the answer...probably to all questions!!!

It seemed part of the Christmas tradition, to watch my father go up and down the ladder into the attic, and rummage in tool drawers, to find spare bulbs, then sit quietly for an hour (with a small glass of Bristol Cream) sequentially replacing bulbs and testing the lights.

Hmm, sounds like a loose connection which might even be from being kept somewhere cold. Sad to say if it is it will likely happen again but, to live in the moment, just rejoice that they are working now. Red berry lights give a lovely warm glow.

Not lights, but thrilled to discover boxes of traditional old baubles, glass bauble garland and lametta in its original 50s packaging while clearing my MIL‘s cellar!! She discarded them just before I joined the family in the 80s in favour of clear blown-glass baubles, also fab and classy but I love the nostalgia and colours of the post-war find!!

I think it is wonderful that you had done all that decluttering and when these came into your life (and house) you could celebrate and enjoy them fully instead of being overwhelmed and worrying what to do with them. Well done Swissrose! (I had to look up lametta.)

I think you made a very important observation there, we can indeed send spaceships to Mars and (my opinion) could also make Christmas lights that last a life time. And washing machines and cars and so much more. The problem is we don't. It would demand a complete make-over for our world-economy and a profound change in values for each of us but I believe it could be done.

Built in obsolescence still is predominant - sustainable it is not. We can do it but as you say we don't....

Hope they're still working... :-) Mine are fine luckily and am enjoying them in the partially made tree. And I worked out this year that if I have them lit for several hours every evening for a month it will cost me less than 70p total electricity... bargain for sparkly joy!
