I simply blame Mrs Barbour....

Why do I believe that getting up early is virtuous?

I woke an hour later than usual this morning and my immediate reaction was 'Oh no!'. I actually, momentarily, felt ashamed.

Mrs Barbour taught her class of five year olds to recite this Robert Louis Stevenson poem, so it's clearly her fault! (I loved Mrs Barbour).

A birdie with a yellow bill
Hopped upon my window sill
Cocked his shining eye and said
'Ain't you 'shamed you sleepy head?'

Well no, blackbird. I just needed more sleep, thank you for asking.

I learned a lot about questioning my beliefs (which were often just early conditioning, not really beliefs) from Byron Katie's book  Loving What Is and found the chapter Doing The Work On Underlying Beliefs very freeing.

Recognising the immediate reaction of 'Oh No' from a different source.
There's only so much one can do in a day and getting up late confronts me with having to make more choices than I already need to.
And in writing this I am wondering what belief might be underlying...

There is not enough time? Is it true Byron Katie would ask...

I'm an early bird too. I like to get everything important done before lunch as I start to slow down then. Husband usually gets going mid-afternoon and then can't be stopped. Annoying!

You can't change your body clock I find.

As a chronic early riser (2:30 am this morning-just woke up and couldn't go back to sleep), I can't even remember the last time I slept past 5 am. I would probably be very shocked if I did and would have reacted just as you did..oh, no!

Will have to save that book you mention for later. Just started Julia Cameron's 2016 book about approaching retirement. Back to morning pages...does that mean I should get up even earlier?? :)

We teachers always get the blame! Teehee! I do like to get up early as I feel I get more done of a morning and tend to feel annoyed with myself if I sleep on. I must go off and add Byron Katie and Julia Cameron to my wish list.
