On our firsr evening , after finding and marvelling at the beautiful modernist apartment Grace had found for us, we dined out. It had been a year since we four friends had been together (in Edinburgh) and we had a leisurely catch up over dinner. On our first full day we visited - Couleé Verte Rue Creémieux Jardin des Plantes Arene de Lutece Rue Moufettard Institut du Monde Arabe Sennelier and Saint Ephrem le Syriaque (a candlelit concert) FABULOUS. To be taken around Paris by Grace who knows it so well was very special. This linear park above the city streets was remarkably tranquil. with coffee, cakes, wine, bubbly and excitement after a wonderful trip with friends, one of whom lives in Paris. We don't do things by halves when we get together! I love the way they package purchases from the cake shops.. More when I have calmed down! Sometimes they do! I had a notepad on which each page was headed Dream. Plan. Do. I really liked that notepad. I'm very good at the dreaming bit. Can do the planning though much of it is tedious..nearly done. And ready for the Do. Will report back next week. Meanwhile what are you dreaming of right now? What steps will you take to make it come true? Perhaps there is one little baby step you could take today? Where did that come from?
I know I did not plant yellow in with the pink. I have been enjoying listening to the book of this name on BBC Sounds (still available). Especially episode two which is about Erasmus - a hero of mine. I was lucky enough to be an Erasmus student, studying in Sweden and Venice , one of the ten million who benefitted from this wonderful European exchange programme, sadly a victim of Brexit. Erasmus lived a life of travel, reading and friendship - which sounds as good a way to live to me in the 21C as it was to Erasmus in the 15C and 16C. Who are your heroes from history? And why? Did you know that hellebores could do this? On frosty nights they collapse to the ground then recover as the day goes on. I started lifting it in at night becasue I wasn't sure it could sustain this behaviour, but apparently they can! Summer curtains in the bathroom, and yet more snow! It's quite hard to stay inn sync with the seasons.. I keep popping in and out to fill my eyes with the gorgeousness. I keep geting my clogs in the shot. The astonishing tulips are as big as a hand.
Do you love to change things around with the seasons? I took down the snow painting and lifted the thick winter rug, put down the summer rug and put up a garden painting (called The Yellow Shouts To The Pink).... and woke up to snow on the hills!
.. My daughter worked with a group of people to house and support a family of Syrian refugees who had spent 12 years of their lives in a refugee camp in Egypt. When the woman of the family was asked how things were going she said the small ordinary Scottish town where she now lived was 'paradise'. I found her comment so touching, and humbling and I wanted to share it with you. Is it possible that many of us live in paradise - we just don't notice it? ..by the tulips, the gorgeous weather and getting the grass cut today both in the back and the front gardens.
I hope you all have a lovely Easter weekend. A short trip to see the wild daffodils in beautiful Farndale in North Yorkshire. Narcissus pseudonarcissus is the dainty native daffodil. I plan to plant some in the autumn. While I was away my dear laptop seems to have fixed itself!! (So far so good...) Spring is here at last and work has started in eanest in the garden. Power hosing of paths and steps and garden furniture, edging of paths, general cleaning up and breakfasts and coffees outside on one or two sunny days. Unfortunately there are problems currently with Weebly and photographs which are proving difficult to solve, so I may be unable to post for a bit...So sorry! It's very frustrating. Wish me luck. Enjoy the season everyone. ..like cooking. It helps iif I clear all the surfaces in my very snall kitchen and make it somwwhere I want to be in. I make sure it's warm enough, I have enough light, I have all the ingredients (30 mile round trip on a bus to the shiops if not!). A fresh tea towel, a bowl of hot soapy water so I can wash up as I go. It helps if I don the beautiful linen apron a friend gave me for my birthday. It's funny just how much difference this makes. I feel like a real cook with this on. I might put on some music, or a podcast and the scene is set. I cut the aubergines in half and score them and add oil and salt before cooking them for a bout 40 minutes. Oven at 189C. Meanwhile I fry some miced beef or lamb, onion and garlic and add a tin of chopped tomatoes, some tomato puree and when the aubergine is soft I scrape out the fleesh and add it to the mix, then layer the sauce into the aubergine shells with some mozarella and basil leaves and pop back into the oven till the cheese on top is melted and golden. I set a nice table and pour a glass of wine, and realise I have quite enjoyed myself. |
