Simply Eat well..

Oh joy! Weve got a hammock!

Well, day one of the healthy eating plan was good - lots of nice fresh food and an hour's walk.

But, (there's always a but isn't there!)....I have two problems so far:

One is Zoe's suggestion that you get rid of  everything from your kitchen which is not on the list. How do you do this when someone else in the house still wants to eat these things? You can't, can you Penny? So willpower will be required (the hard bit).

Also in our culture, as in most cultures, it is courteous to offer a cake or a biscuit with a coffee when friends call. What is the healthy alternative here? Ideas please....though I fear the answer is willpower again..

Frances - are you getting over your resistance to being told what to do?

I find there is great freedom in it - simply doing what you are told -  but only if you trust who is doing the telling, and I do trust Zoe Harcombe, having used her books for a couple of years now. I do what Fly Lady tells me every day, and housework has never been easier, so I no longer have an issue with this.

Are you good at following this kind of plan? Can you accept being told what to do?

When I did my food intolerance elimination diet for 10 weeks last year, I kept all my allowed foods in a box on the bench so that I couldn't go and stand in front of the pantry daydreaming about all the foods I couldn't eat! I also think treats should be incorporated every week when on a normal eating plan otherwise one is likely to fall of the bandwagon with an almighty crash. Cheering you on my friend. Proving it to yourself will be the most valuable thing.

10 weeks - that was quite an achievement. I hope the results were well worth that effort. Treats - dark chocolate, the odd glass of wine are a must! If I'm tempted to fall, I shall think of you cheering me on, so thank you Lucent.

I was discussing with a friend yesterday this business of having someone in for coffee - cake/biscuit or no? If she and I visit one another, there is no question and no food! We wondered if it was a more Scottish thing to feel food has to be offered. It's rare for me to offer or accept nibbles between meals - I've always felt it spoils the proper meals in the day. So am I rude, do you think, or merely self-centred?

Neither rude nor self-centred Chris - just sensible! But I feel awful if I have nothing to offer - maybe it's a family thing?

i think offering of food is a universal way of showing hospitality and love...think of the italians and ukrainians! one cannot get out of their homes without being stuffed...:-)
on my 3 month elimination diet, i simply offered and watched others eat...and yes, i did find it very helpful to be "ordered" what to eat and what not to eat...it took away the temptation for me....good luck with this freda!

Thank you Julia - I think my plan is a lot easier than an elimination diet. I do admire the deterimination of those who unertake that.

Hi Freda, ever since we were offered large plates of fresh strawberries at a Kindergarten parents' evening years ago, I've enjoyed offering fruit to guests who drop by - strawberries and plums are popular and recently I had a large punnet of really gorgeous apricots that a friend and I chomped on over our tea :) I also offered a dish of fresh berries including blueberries to a work colleague of my husband's he brought home one day without notice, claiming dinner (!), and the men really enjoyed them along with a glass of wine as an apéritif... (obviously, I choose fruit that is "dry" and offer finger-cleaning gear!!) From December 1st (Advent) we also buy seasonal mandarines/tangerines and that is very common here in Switzerland - a dish of whole peanuts, individually wrapped chocs and mandarines around Christmas time is on nearly everyone's coffee table (you could omit the chocs and even the peanuts, which are utterly messy and too more-ish!!), alongside the Advent candle wreath... In the autumn, guests often enjoy cracking their own walnuts that we've either collected or bought, and dried fruit is also anther option. Enjoy!!
