Semplicemente...

I've completed my 30 day challenge! (See here.) Have you? I missed about 4 days. I do it at night and several nights I was out and once I just forgot.

I now have 96 words of Italian - that's about 90 more than I had on day one. I have reached level 5, earned 22 lingots (whatever they are), kept up my strength levels on Basics 1 and 2, phrases and food, am 15% fluent....and can be polite and order coffee.

Useful.

Fun.

I think I'll keep going..

I gave up on Busuu as they kept trying to sell me stuff - emailing and blocking the free part of the course,  and stuck with Duolingo and BBC Languages Italian (archived but still useful).

Have you tried learning a language online?

Or anything else?

And for my next 30 day challenge...

Actually I can't decide. I had thought of working for half an hour a day on the things on my To-Do list that I never get around to. Doesn't sound much fun, but the sense of achievement at the end of 30 days would be HUGE.

I'll sleep on it....

Buona notte!

Buongiorno Freda! If you're averaging 0.5% fluency a day, you only have another 170 days before you are 100% fluent! (That may or may not be accurate - maths was never a strong point. I can feel a 30 day challenge coming on...) Beautiful picture. Did you see the huge moon last night too? Ciao.

Something maths based I think... just need to find something interesting and not too basic.

since you have proved to yourself over and over this year that you CAN keep a 30 day challenge, pretty darned well....tackling that olong-term to-do list would probably accomplish a lot....give it a go!...i think, for any of us, doing 30 min a day of things we have put off for way too long, would be huge!...i am consdiering tackling, daily, my digital files, both on and off the computer.....that is one legacy i don't wish to leave my kids!

I really like these self imposed 30 day challenges - they work for me so far...I shall try this for 7 days then re-evaluate. Good luck with your digital files. Progress is progress.

I am inspired by you....90 words. I will learn 47 Spainish words in August. This winter, I will resume my 1 verse from each Bible book memorization. I already know many verses, but remembering the chapter stumps me. You are right on, doesn't sound like much, but more than I know now.

90 words in Italian in a month sounds impressive. I once dreamed about reading Petrarca's sonnets in Italian.. I did refresh my German (with Duolingo) though, that too because I wanted to read an author in the original (Joseph Roth). And succeeded.

My August challenge will be most likely be getting to know/getting used to Fly Lady. So thank you for sharing your approach.

Which Josep.h Roth would you recommend (I've not read any). I shall be reading it in English! What a lovely success story! Well done. Good Luck for August - keep it simple..

That would be his most famous one 'The Radetsky March' which tells the history of the downfall of the Habsburg monarchy as seen by protagonist Von Trotta and his son. The story starts in 1859 and ends in 1916, the First World War then already two years on it's way. Beautiful written account of a vanished world.

One of the last longer novels I read before deciding to concentrate on and save my energy/reading time mostly (months of May and Oktober are exceptions, as is reading poetry) for getting more informed about nature in general and climate change in particular.

Writing a blog on a foreign language can be accountable for learning a language online? :) Maybe not quite learn, but at least not to forget. Foreign languages fluency tend to be dissolved if there isn't a regular practice, I think. Whenever I'm trying to learn a new language, I find it helpful to read in that language, usually re-reading my favourite books in the language I'm trying to learn. Perhaps it sounds strange, but I find it quite enjoyable and helpful. Good luck with your next challenge!

That certainly counts! I am so impressed that you can do that. Reading your favourite book in the language you are trying to learn is a great idea. I just completed a quite simple money transaction in Italian (which made me nervous) but I managed it....

I did start off well with my German but then I missed a few days. I will try again in the winter when there isn't so much to do in the evenings! Sarah x
