Would you like a drawing lesson?

Holly leaves are the most exquisite things to draw. See if you can find some and just look at them for a day or two. Look at them side on, or with the tip facing towards you. Look at how complex and irregular they are, how the spines twist and turn, showing the matt underside. Look at how glossy the top surface is. How do you draw the shine on a holly leaf?

We had holly bushes in front of a large window in our last home. Every April, almost like clockwork, a flock of cedar waxwings would descend (no other word for it) on them. Once, I counted 36! It would take a day or two, but when they finally left, just about every berry would have been stripped & eaten. I waited for those waxwings to come; this was the only time I'd see them. They are just gorgeous birds! Chickadees (like your tits) also liked to perch in them. I miss those holly bushes.

Like Cathy I am very fond of hollies (and would love a flock of waxwings) though not so keen on clipping the plants of them that are in my garden, all very jaggy varieties. I will try studying the leaves and attempt to draw them as it sounds a very mindful, meditative pastime. The leaves are often quite twisted and unusual shapes.

We do have wax wings, though I have never seen any. I hope you enjoy drawing your leaves.
