Simply Eat....and enjoy shopping in a supermarket?

I never thought I'd say this but I love a supermarket!!  (See my thoughts on supermarket stress at 1st April 2010 - archives column on right)

Wholefoods Market have opened a store in Glasgow:

Instead of my usual in and grab what I want and get out again as quickly as possible, I actually wanted to stay longer, chatting to the friendly, cheerful and knowledgeable staff, tasting the samples, admiring the displays, having another coffee, reading the brochures about sustainable fishing, farm animal welfare, 'Ask the butcher', 'Meet the producers', supporting local and third world charities....

Brilliant! Can't wait to go again!

That supermarket looks amazing, what a shame the only others in the UK are in London, to far to go for a weekly shop!
I don't often venture into the top 4 supermarkets for food and find when I do that I am completly overwhelmed.

I know that feeling Sarah, but in this one I was overwhelmed by delight! I hope they open more stores in UK.

I adore Wholefoods Market. I am moving to Glasgow forthwith. What do you think my career prospects would be like? I will live on Merrilee Road. My Great Grandfather had a newsagents shop on Maxwell Road- it's in my blood. Do you fancy another retail foray? Imagine a Wholefoods with fabric instead of fruit, quilts instead of kumquats. A sure fire winner!

When I lived beside Maxwell Park, I had an allotment overlooking Maxwell Road. Small world!

I wonder if you your allotment was at the New Victoria Gardens site?

Hi Maggie, Yes it was! I started at the Glenapp St end, but moved to a bigger plot at the Maxwell road end. Did you come to any of out Open Days? We might have met? Or you might have bought some of my sweet peas, as cut flowers?
Or did you have a plot your self? Mine was the one with the wee zen garden.

Hello Liz
I have only visited the allotments once. It was a couple of years ago. I was searching for my great grandfather's allotment and found it on the left ( looking towards Maxwell Road) towards the Glenapp Road end. I loved the secret garden door at that end.I was really impressed by the site- it had a lovely community feel and was like a village of small garden plots. There is a Glasgow allotment heritage project collecting historical info. at www.gah.org.uk. Thanks for replying. I would like to have seen your Zen garden.

Yes, it was a proper wee community. Everybody helped each other and when there was a glut of any crop, there was a system for distributing the excess, so I didn't need to grow a lot of veg and risk wasting some.
That door in the wall gave the place a "secret garden" feel. I loved going in through it, entering another world. I still have the key, but they will have changed the locks by now, surely?
Not sure about photos - before digital - but I'll have a look and let you know. I can always scan them in.
