Simply life changing?

For quite some time now I have been posting on Fridays about the process of what has come to be known (not just by me) as Kondoing.

I have faithfully followed the book The Life Changing Magic of Tidying and yes, it has changed my life! Truly. Lighter, freer and more buoyant (those swimming metaphors again).

I'd like to say I've finished Tah Dah, but I still have the category photographs to do and I'm saving it for dark winter nights. Instead of dreading the task which I did at the beginning of the process, I am looking forward to it. I have bought a rather nice picture frame in anticipation....

It has been a brilliant experience.

I know some of you are doing it too!

Has it changed your life in any way?

So what will I write about on Fridays?

Venice I think (see this post)

Modified kondo-ing here. Marie would definitely not approve of some of the approach as I've applied it, but, this is what's manageable for me right now. And it has definitely been beneficial and I'm certain it will continue to be.

I have tried to stick to categories as she advises and have definitely benefited from her tips around organizing drawers. Also, the moment I realize something feels at all burdensome without being useful, I'm more easily able to let it go. If I realize something doesn't "spark joy" it either goes to the charity shop or gets binned. The clarity that comes from the question is liberating.

Some things are easy, and others difficult. It's interesting that I found books easy, but papers (the kind you file and that might be important) tough -- am going to need to do that one again and cull more aggressively. And I find photos surprisingly easy and fun -- I just picked the best and most flattering ones in my collection and ditched the rest without a thought -- I eliminated 90% of them in just a couple of hours.

Fantastic CC. I do agree about the clarity being liberating. Hurrah for Marie Kondo!

I've left the photographs for cold winters nights, let's see...10 years now. I keep promising myself I'll do them, but don't. And now that I'm in the process of cleaning out my parent's house (they saved EVERYTHING!!!) I'm willing to bet I won't be doing photos in 2016 either.

Are you planning to whittle all the photos down to just 6?

600 maybe! Good luck with clearing you parents house. It sounds daunting Cathy.

along with konding my digital files daily for 30 days, i will be tackling digital photos...they now feel like a burden rather than a joy...

I took your question with me on my walk.

I think what I like most about Kondoing now - I am not finished and suspect I'll take the rest of the year for it - is that it made me take stock. Not only of my/our possesions, but also of where I 'stand' at this time in my life. I now realise this was what the sense of urgency I have been feeling for some time was about. I also notice it is gone. I've gained insight in 'unfinished business' as well as 'projects' I'd like to do. And I notice I have more relaxed free time.

I remember that you raised the question about how it would feel after finishing, and especially would finishing leave a void. I now know it won't, because what might have seemed a void at that time more and more becomes a creative space.

I am very grateful you started writing about Marie Kondo.

It's not just about 'stuff' is it? It's about understanding yourself better as you say here. I too have been delighted to find I seem to have more time! I'm very grateful you have shared the experience with me.

I am a late comer and have only started this in the past few weeks. We have reached the paperwork stage so it was quite handy to have some rain this weekend! Like you I have tried many things in the past with some success but somehow this feels different. Bearing in mind we did clear lots of stuff before moving, I now have an emptier and tidier wardrobe and book shelves that are staying that way! I think considering the joy things give me and handling everything makes it easier to make decisions. Looking forward to continuing the process and hopefully obtaining the same benefits as others. Sarah x
