..several things at once. Do you do this?

Ploughing my way through Hermione Lee's biography of Penelope Fitzgerald. (Loving the way the glass top of my new desk reflects the sky into the room.)

I could give you a quote I love from almost any page of Swan by poet Mary Oliver -

If you suddenly and unexpectedly feel joy, don't hesitate. Give into it.

Picture

Dipping into the journals of Delacroix. Interesting, though not as much about his painting as I had hoped.

Picture

Delighting in a re-read of Tove Jansson's The Summer Book. Must get The Winter Book.

Laughing out loud at this 'all-too-human, funny and poignant tale'. Unflinchingly honest account by a natural story teller. Published in Canada (and sent to me by Julia - thank you!) it is well worth reading if you can find it..

And did you know that Sylvia Plath could draw?

I always have several books on the go so I can turn to whichever I am in the mood for.

Oh yes, an early morning poem from John Burnside's The Hoop just now, follewed by a page from a nature diary, this year's choice
is Stephen Moss: Wild Hares & Hummingbirds, in the afternoon just now a chapter from Mary Stewart's Stormy Petral and in the evening Iris Murdoch A Writer at War, Letters and Diaries 1938 - 1946.
And no, I have most of her writing but didn't know Sylvia Plath could draw. Want to read Mary Oliver now.

Freda, I have a copy of The Winter Book that has been read but is pristine. I need to re-home it as I am moving flat and must reduce my book collection (I will have to re-visit you advice on this). If you let me have your address I'd be delighted to send it to you, as a small return for all the enjoyment your blog gives me.

And, yes, I often have several books on the go, unless I hit upon one I can't put down...

Lucy you are most kind! (Have emailed you my address.) I couldn't put down They Left Us Everything and stayed up till the early hours reading it. I hope the move goes smoothly.

I often think I don't have the patience for poetry but love Mary Oliver's - she's quite direct, in a poetic way, if that makes sense!
