Simply resolving to....

4/1/2016

1   Clean the grill pan every time I use it.

2   Remember birthdays.

3   Try to make my blogposts more exciting than this one. :-)

If you like classical music you may enjoy this series of interviews on Living The Classical Life. I loved the one with the amazing Stephen Hough who talks so illuminatingly about learning and relaxation and creativity. Wonderful. I do like insights into how other creative people think - poets, dancers, musicians, sculptors, writers....

OK I've just thought of another resolution -

4   Take more time to listen to music.

It's funny that you should mention loving how creative people think - I was just talking to a friend about this over coffee this morning. There are some people who just ooze creativity out of every pore, no matter what they do. My friend is on the scientific side and loves my creativity and the way I think because it is so different to the way she thinks. It does make the world an interesting place when we all contribute in our own special way. I do want to enlarge my horizons this year - reading things I wouldn't normally read, listen to music i wouldn't normally listen too etc.i think it is going to be an exciting year. Maybe the word should be expand rather than enlarge. Myword will definitely be Explore.

Explore (like Simply) can be applied to anything you wish - you will have fun with it Elaine. It is so interesting how we differ in our thinking!

This is completely tangential to your post and the point of your blog, 'tho I suppose it could be considered part of the "exploring" and "re-freshing" theme. I've been doing some heavy-duty reading and wanted to share a finding.

I've been reading a lot about vitamin B12 and its role in various conditions. Medical journal stuff as well as books. I've been having some health problems that I'm trying to get to the bottom of and I often find its important to do your on research so you can ask the doctors better questions and make more informed decisions.

One condition that keeps popping up in my reading is macular degeneration, as a neurologic impact of B12 deficiency. I mention it because the understanding of B12 deficiency has evolved a lot over the past 3 or 4 years to the point where the treatment protocols being advised in medical journals are changing.

It may be something you want to look at. It has become clear to me that there are huge gaps in the understanding of this vitamin in the medical community in many parts of the world, and my own experience with medical treatment in the UK fits with that. Even a neurologist I've spoken to doesn't seem to fully understand this vitamin's composition and function -- which is crazy. Certainly, a lot of GPs aren't aware of all the issues.

A book worth looking at is:

I) Could it be B12 - An Epidemic of Misdiagnoses (Pacholok and Stuart, authors). They have a couple of pages on macular degeneration and the book is very informative.
II) Also - an article from the European Journal of Clinical Medicine is worth reading to understand why there can be problems with B12 treatment. A lot of doctors prescribe only part of what's needed methylcobalamin and miss the other active form -- adenosylcobalamin -- which is the form needed to support the nerves and nervous system. Without the second form, the nerves start to die and yet the blood test results don't reflect the second form.

Other readers of your blog may also be interested in the book. It's astounding the range of conditions that can mimic B12 problems including Alzheimer Disease, depression and other forms of mental illness, multiple sclerosis, cardiovascular disease and a whole bunch of others. Even if you are healthy, it's worth doing the various tests once to see whether you should be taking a supplement for B12, especially if over the age of 50.

Apologies for the detour!

But an interesting detour CC, and I will follow up the links and reading, especially with regard to AMD. Thank you and good luck with the health issues you mention.

Do you know Ludovico Einaudi's 'Walk' from his album 'In a Time Lapse?'.

I love listening to creative people too - the TED talks and the Desert Island Discs archives can be good sources.
Do report back at the end of the year and let us know if you've stuck to resolution no 1 - gold stars may need to be awarded!!!

That's probably the hardest one. I shall expect a gold star from you if I manage to keep it!
