Simply..a tease....

13/3/2018

Spring is such a tease, and I fall for it every time!

I can remember even as a small child the longing for it, almost a physical ache, and being  allowed after much pleading to put on lighter clothes and sandshoes at the first hint of sun with warnings....'You'll be cold in five minutes!'  I often was. Yesterday I went without my hat and gloves for the first time in months - such a lovely feeling, but being older and wiser I had hat and gloves in my bag and was glad of them later.

Gales forecast now and the possibility of more snow at the weekend, but it did smell of spring today.

It's a bright, sunny, springlike day here in Paris. I am looking out at the Parc Monceau from my classroom window (before the children arrive!). Some lovely vibrant green buds are visible ...

Teasing us here too. Rapid change of plans for the weekend with the forecast of more snow and chill blowing in from Siberia.

I take off my mittens, then put them back on...then on/off several more times. Maybe Spring is a “strip tease” ;-)

Tee hee (maybe not the most sexy one though!)

I love the primary colours in that photo Freda. Very windy here today and I'm typing this by the fire, but yesterday it was warm and sunny enough to walk round the garden without a coat! And it does smell and feel like the start of Spring. I love the feeling of potential...
Oh, and with no ducks around this year my crocuses have remained un-sat on! Bonus.

It's a time of contrasts this between-season time, isn't it..

Very windy and still cold here. But to help me think Spring, I did go to a Plant Communities seminar this morning held at a very large garden nursery. The woman presenter was very knowledgeable--had worked with many well-known landscape designers. What is funny is that the photos she showed reminded me of your gardens and some of the scenes I have seen on other commenters sites (e.g. Rusty Duck). The idea presented was to plant in large groups (variety of plants and bushes, grasses, etc) and have less (or very little) grass so that you create vistas. While this is common in the UK, it isn't the norm here. It isn't entirely practical for for our large yard (too costly), but I brought her photos of my front yard areas that I want to change up and she had a lot of great suggestions. So while the weather isn't yet Spring-like, I am at least trying to make use of this time for planning.

I think I'd have liked to be at that seminar. I wonder if you would like New Romantic Landscapes by Oehme and Van Sweden - two very influential New World designers. It's one of my favourite books. Enjoy your planning Mary.

So strange you should mention them and the book! I was looking at some of their work earlier this afternoon and ordering their book from the library. They lived DC before Van Sweden's death in 2013.

It is Autumn here and absolutely glorious! Sunny days, crisp air, and we have lit the first fire for the year. A beautiful time for gardening, I have just finished planting out the Winter vegetables.

We are expecting the coldest Winter on record, however, and think it is coming down under from you girls further north! So I will load the wood shed until it cannot hold any more and stock up the pantry for hearty meals...

I do think of the southern hemisphere readers when I go on about the seasons and the weather as I do! Enjoy your lovely autumn Madeleine.
