Simply..a virus....

.. is a virus, doing what a virus does - replicating at every opportunty.

It doesn't know or care if you complain, or what tier you are in, or if its fair, (the words fair and virus can't belong in the same sentence). It's not personal or political or rational or evil. It doesn't know we have vaccines. It doesn't know it's Christmas. It doesn't 'know' anything, other than to replicate in human bodies at every opportunity and how to spread to other human bodies whenever and wherever it can. It doesn't know or care that it makes us ill, so ill that some of us wll die.

We, however, know how to reduce it's chances of replicating and spreading. We have  choices to make.

Simple.

Though we may not like it.  :-(

We have controlled many viruses in the past. :-)

We will defeat this one too, of course.

What a great and thoughtful post.
Making choices. Something we do every day without thinking; what to wear, what to have for breakfast.
Some folks seem to find it hard to make the big decisions though and would prefer to leave that to others.

You are so right to point out what the virus actually is. It is not an evil thing intent on making us ill, it’s just a thing, pursuing its own life course. But like a river that overflows its banks or a runaway horse, it’s best caught, controlled and contained to prevent further harm.

Here in the UK next week we have a five day opportunity to calm this thing and help control it. Choices do need to be made, as you say. For me the choice is really simple; I want everybody I love (including me) to be here in 2021 and beyond and so I shall be acting accordingly.

It’s not been easy to make good choices Damsonlily, . Thanks for commenting. I am with you on wanting us all to get through this healthy, even if it is a very long haul.

HI Damsonlily.

I think that I disagree with you on catching, controlling and containing a river, which I understand, can cause flooding downstream.
Apparently, the ideal way is to work with the river, by expanding the width of its course.
(I've no expert knowledge, just watched a couple of documentaries.)
And, I'm trying to think of a parallel approach to the virus.
Maybe that we alter our lives to live more seasonally - visiting each other in the Summer and nesting in the Winter.
Maybe, living more outside.
Your comment sparked me thinking. Thank you. Good wishes, Susan.

Susan, I loved your reply! There are so many ways to look at these things. I suppose I was thinking about a river in the context of it flooding and causing damage to the surrounding land, and even life.
Early last spring, the area where I live in the UK was flooded as two of our biggest rivers overflowed and even met up. The little town where I live was marooned, only briefly but the floods took a long time to subside and ruined winter crops, delayed new plantings and the bringing of livestock back onto the land. Some farmers actually lost livestock in the floods.
There must be more than one answer to this, of course. And I’m sure you are right. But these rivers already have big flood plains and the excess water was a result of an abnormally wet year. I wonder if fast emergency action is the only answer in those circumstances.
Thank you so much for challenging my thinking - encounters like this are such an opportunity to grow. And I love your idea of “nesting”...our local farm shop is actually called The Nest, so it’s lovely to think we are already doing this in one sense.

Normally, for all its attendant stress, Christmas marks a chance to breathe a sigh of relief that we have made it through a year in which challenges have probably been evident for all of us. This year the slog to get here has been immense and I understand that many of us feel that we’re holding on by our fingertips. I certainly do myself at times. So I understand why these particular choices are being so difficult for folks to make. Let us hope that the choices we make help to make things better.

Oh I do hope so! It has indeed felt like a’slog’ at times and a merry party with family and friends is like some far off dream. How much longer can we wait? As long as it takes has to be the answer I know...

I wonder if Easter time could become our new annual gathering time?
It would fit for Christians and for many other religions and beliefs.
We could meet our families, eat together, and exchange gifts then?
And, still honour our various religions' Christmas time beliefs, more quietly in the Winter?

As you say, the virus doesn't really care what is going on in your life. It simply lives to replicate.

We already planned not to gather with family this Christmas (numbers here are very high), but that was reinforced yesterday when I learned one of my son's MiL has contracted the dreaded virus and his whole family has been exposed. So far she has just the cough. We hope for her sake that it does not progress further. My son's family of five are under a 14 day quarantine regardless of their test results (not yet known) so that means they must remain in their home until the end of December. Christmas presents and goodies will be left on their front porch December 24th, along with an necessary food or other items they require. Needs must.

What a shame! And what timing! We will all be hoping for the best for all concerned and yes, needs must.
