Part of the forest where I live is being harvested and my favoutite forest walk has been closed for a while now. It was quite a shock to see the change! A new road has been put in to take the huge log lorries.

I feel lucky that the felled area isn't visible from the house!

I guess that constitutes a walk through a horizontal forest. :(

Forget 'forest bathing' for a while = like a decade. May have to find another walk but we are not short of forest around here...

I thought from the first picture you were getting in your supply of firewood. sad to think the forest will be no more, or at least changed forever.

It leaves such scars on the landscape though they do replant..but at first it looks like the Somme in World War 1.

Forestry is a big part of our economy and living in a wooden house and burning wood in my stove I've come to accept that it is a crop...but I do feel for all the red squirrels and the deer and the birds in there.

Understanding the whole of it makes it easier to bear for sure. But knowing that mature trees will not be back for a human lifetime (or at least half of one!) is hard to grip, isn’t it?

I was fascinated to learn from you that this "crop" was originally grown to make pit props, and of course the mines are now closed. I am sure they will have other uses. Sadly I have no sense of smell. Thank you for taking me on this walk. Loved the unusual ripple effects too!

It must be so hard to plan for 50 years ahead! I wonder what the trees they are planting now will be used for. It was a lovely walk with you to share it with Elizabeth.
