This is the post I was about to publish when I heard of the fire.....

Late and quiet

We fitted a lot in - sunrise at Trocadero (yesterday's post), sunset from the roof of our apartment block in Montparnasse (header photo) and Notre Dame at midnight - though not all in the same day, and with rests in the afternoons!

A few days in Paris were a tonic and a thrill.

I am reminded of the atmosphere in York in 1984 when the Minster was badly damaged by fire - there was a palpable hush over the whole city the following morning as people wordlessly acknowledged each other by making eye contact, and the only sound was that of a helicopter circling. The south trancept and the rose window are now fully and beautifully restored.

A grey and grieving day in Paris as one French commentator said, but mercifully there were no fatalities.

Simply too shocking for words, Freda....things are sounding a bit more hopeful today..but one can only imagine the destruction.

Much more hopeful Jula - all is not lost.

Beautiful photos . Notre Dame is such an imposing building. It is incredible that they they managed to save so much, it’s a real testament to the bravery of the firefighters and the skill of the medieval builders.

There must have been a lot of plans enacted to save as much as they did and the bravery of those firefighters! These are I think my three favourite phtographs of the trip - I am glad you like them PennyL.

Beautiful photos Freda - whish I was there with you. I did springtime in Paris as a fashion student in the seventies at the Paris Fashion shows - had a wonderful time.
So many fires with these old historic buildings - I wonder if more could be done to prevent them.

Beautiful photos Freda. I love that the Metro lamp looks like the moon. What strikes me about Notre Dame is that it has such a presence - I don't believe even in it's current state that that will be lost.

I think that is partly because it has been there forever,,,
