Cath asked what a quince smells like. Such a difficult question!

Like flowers was my first thought, but I typed it into Google, as one does, and found so many nice things, poetic things, I had to share with you.

Some of the bloggers who wax lyrical about quinces are some with the most poetic blog names: In Eat The Roses the scent is described as 'pineapples and heaven' and there is Glass Petal Smoke. Or what about The Joy Kitchen?

I like Sue's blog The Quince Tree - full of unpretentious easy sounding and delicious looking recipes.

So, like pineapple, pears, coconut, roses, violets, apples, honey, deep, exotic, spicy, tropical or heaven?

I still think they smell of freesias.

And I think I'll be using them as suggested here.

What do you think they smell like?

I have never actually seen a quince. Husband bought me a quince tree a couple of Christmasses ago - but it has yet to bear fruit.

What a lovely gift! I wonder how long they take to fruit. I asked for some in the fruit shop today and she'd never heard of them.

I don't think I've ever smelt one, but I love the thought of them filling a room with the scent of freesias! I wonder if the smell would be strong enough to mask the odour of 'dead rat in wall cavity' which I endured a couple of winters ago? Nothing seemed to overpower that!

I only knew the term from The Owl and the Pussycat ("slices of quince") until I met my husband. His family have a quince tree in the garden, as did his grandparents, and henceforth I learnt to love the quince and dread the prep. However, meanwhile, I've also learnt that ripe quinces aren't that difficult to deal with once you've cut and peeled them. My daughter's favourite jam is quince jelly, which is quite popular here in Switzerland. As it's drained, my MIL used to make quince jelly sweets with the pulp, rolling them in sugar as a Christmas treat. I've also used them with pork, which is delicious (a bit like using apple sauce).
As for the smell - to me, it's a warm, spicy smell reminiscent of apple but with the softness of elderflower, but that is very subjective!!
There are a couple in my big bowl of nuts/apples/pumpkin so I will have another sniff… ;)

What lovely associations you have with quince. Sounds lovely with pork. Smell is totally subjective isn't it.

…and in the past few years, they've started selling them in the supermarket, too, only in season, of course! (This is where the jelly is also sold as standard all year round, I think, though there are also some seasonal jams there.)

Just came across this in The Flavourthesaurus (Niki Segnit)
"Quince's aroma is a combination of apple, pear , rose and honey, with a musky, tropical depth."

Sorry, I should specify, it's actually a book! Yes, I think you'd like it, a Cornflower recommendation from a couple of years ago, if I remember correctly...
