Simply..Brrrr....

A chilly two degrees tonight, but little cloud so it may be possible to see the Orionid meteor shower if I can stay awake long enough.

I lifted the summer rug and put down the winter one today and will get the faux fur throw for the bed out of its drawer. The HeatGen t-shirts and tights are already being worn (I needed them for a concert in bone chilling Glasgow Cathedral on Wednesday!) and the big scarves are at the ready.  I'm thinking thick soups and hearty stews. Must get the crockpot out of the cupboard.

And there's a category of things I've not considered yet and that's emergency supplies (thanks Julia for the reminder). I do need a new torch.....

Any advice on emergency kit anyone?

Stay warm (unless you are in the southern hemishere in which case - enjoy doing the opposite from us!).

it's getting cold here, too. my sweaters have been out for a week or so and I'm wearing them! the leaves are finally getting the glorious color we usually see earlier in oct. some are just breath-taking.

It is a beautiful time of year though we seem to suddenly be in winter here Cathy!

Since losing power in our house means no water (on a well), we keep large jugs of water stored for tea and to help with flushing. Have some glass oil lamps and camping lanterns for light sources. In cold weather, we keep logs stacked outside the front door as an alternate heat and cooking source (wood stove). Some long handled cooking prongs can be helpful for toasting bread. Alternately, having some sterno tins and/or a small camp stove to cook on is an option. Storing some tin foods like baked beans or other protein sources helps. In the US, any sign of a storm means the supermarkets are instantly cleaned out of milk, bread and toilet paper! With all our winding, small back roads, we are just as likely to lose power simply because a car runs into a pole or tree and takes down the lines. Can you tell we have experienced many power outages? :)

The longest outage in our area was nine days after a severe ice storm back in early 90s brought down many, many trees which not only took out power lines, but made roads impassable for days. Good to be prepared.

The voice of experience Mary. A few tips for me here - I like the long handled tongs for toast (or marshmallows which I may add to my emergency supply list?)

I bought new warm boots yesterday and have the gloves and scarf ready. We have a camping stove and some gas canisters and a fan heater in case the gas goes off.

In the shed somewhere is a little stove - will look it out forthwith.

On our national list of emergency basics are: radio working on batteries, torch, first help kit and manual, matches in waterproof package, tealights, most used tools, whistle, special heat preserving blanket, supply of water, important telephone nbrs, desinfectant handgel, preserved food, medicines.
We don't have all yet, working at it.

Heating on for the first time here today.

Gosh that is impressive and clearly individuals are expected to take responsibility, which is as it should be I guess. I will upgrade I think!

Brrr here too! I'm probably the wrong person to ask for advice on an emergency kit... I tend to wing it a bit. :-) I do have a torch but would have to take batteries out of something else... but I know this house so intimately I could easily fumble around in the dark! As long as I have matches and logs for the wood burner I know I can heat the house, boil water, cook... and I have a water filter that is good enough to purify water from the brook if absolutely necessary. Must get a few food provisions in though, I shop weekly and don't keep much on hand and don't use a freezer now either. But none of that helps you... I'll be interested to hear suggestions... perhaps I should get more prepared!

I am going to give this a bit more thought Lotta as I too tend to 'wing it' but it may be a nice feeling to be more prepared....

we are working on our 7th emergency crank/solar radio...we have yet to find one that has a lithium battery which lasts. we need it for weather alerts at our cottage, and it HAS come in handy! 10 gallons of bottled water, firewood, or an ax; camp stove, propane. dried beans and rice. salt and bouillon cubes. coffee and tea. pain killers and antibiotic cream, bandages. one can last quite awhile with the above. a bottle of whiskey could be handy if one had to do some first aid without an anesthetic (like pull out a tooth).

Wow. I have to say Americans seem to be much better organised than we Brits in this regard - perhaps our relatively mild climate makes us complacent? I will have to up my game..
