Simply..catching up....

..with some of the boring stuff. It has to be done doesn't it, but I try to make it interesting, fun even, thus Fly Lady - common sense and a touch of humour, and Marie Kondo with her interesting philosophy. Both have been invaluable in helping me simplify my life.

With a few quiet days ahead I've decided it's time to take them, gently, to the next level as they say..

Fly Lady reminds me that I am CEO of my life and home (I often think running a modern-day home is like running a small business) so I am in charge here. I already had some of the good habits Fly Lady recommends you adopt, one month at a time: I already made my bed (2 mins), wiped round the bathroom after I washed (another 2 mins). I adopted her Morning Routine and now certainly move more and drink more water. I've made some progress on paper clutter and the habit of decluttering 15 minutes a day is brilliant, but I've never quite mastered Menu Planning so...with my current favourite book and my shopping list (I do always shop with a list) to hand,

I chose three recipes

and went shopping. I have to tell you that as I write the snow is getting heavier which makes me all the more pleased to be well stocked up and have a plan!

Do you have the Menu Planning habit yet? And is it snowing where you are?

I do have a menu planning habit - especially in the winter! Every year I pick 10 dinners that I would like to rotate throughout the winter and make a pantry list for those dishes. I then make a habit of stocking the pantry list. It simplifies the "what's for dinner" question and makes me mindful of nutrition as I considered this when writing my winter menu. I work full time so this is a great help. I change my menu every winter, keeping something on from last year if I want to. For me, it is such a cozy feeling having these meals "in my pocket". Love you blog BTW. Have been reading for years but have never commented before.

Lisa, how lovely to 'meet' you! I love your winter menu idea and am only just beginning to appreciate the nice feeling you describe of having meals 'in my pocket'. Am wondering why I didn't do this years ago, but better late... I shall work up to ten meals. Thank you!

Your garden views are delightful, Freda..no snow here, but i would love to have some! And again, i admire your discipline, both in managing your home and also your diet and nutrition. My idea of meal-planning is to look iin fridge and pantry and see what i can create. I think it comes from a life-time of reading cookbooks for pleasure...i just know what will go well together...so we never have the same meal twice.i might plan for something big like thanksgiving..but otherwise...it’s a mystery how each day’s meals will turn out...:-)

Wonderful surprises I am sure! As for me, a thirty mile round trip to the shops focuses the mind somewhat and a well stocked freezer is a great comfort!

Julia and I seem to have a lot in common. I, too, admire your (and Lisa's) discipline. At various times in my life, I have done some menu planning...and admit, I need to get back to it. But it feels as though the local supermarket simply has the same old boring items that in Marie Kondo's words, don't spark joy. While I will try a new recipe now and then, at the end of most work days I have trouble finding enthusiasm for the process.

No snow here. Actually supposed to hit 16C here today. Looking forward to Fly Lady's December habit. That one I could get used to!

When the kids were still at school and I had a tight budget, Flylady was a lifesaver for me and I had a basic meal plan for each day of the week. I have lately been thinking we should do that again - my husband likes variety so I can't stick to a small number of meals (my personal preference!) but I can plan as far as e.g. Moday chicken, Tuesday vegetarian, Wed egg dish, Thurs pork, and so on as a guideline. Will probably help the budget, too, instead of our present random eating (we eat low-carb high fat now so no more pizza nights or pasta evenings lol!). Good motivation ;)

I can't bear to waste food so planning helps with that too. You could have lots of variety within that daily menu idea and still have a good stock of the necessary ingredients. I have a country pork dish in the slow cooker smelling good as I write - one serving tonight and two to freeze....I am so pleased to be getting to enjoy cooking again.

I probably have around 10 meals on rotation as well. Each Saturday mornings I write a menu for the week, then check my larder cupboard and the fridge. What's needed goes on the shopping list. It saves on the bit of cooking I most dislike - the daily deciding what to have!
If only I could be so organised with the cleaning!

Fly Lady organized my cleaning for me, it's just taken a lot longer to get to the cooking! It's the decision making that is tiring - about cleaning and cooking - hurrah for Fly Lady!
