I find writing here about my trip is a wonderful way for me to record and process some of the experiences I had, so I am still on about New Zealand!

Murals abound in Christchurch. You can do a walking tour of them and I rather wish I had done it. I didn't look at the website Watchthisspace until after I came home - there are some interesting interviews with artists about official urban art and illegal art, the careers of the artists and the 'gentrification' when developers make use of the murals as a selling point for new urban dwellings....(the dynamics of rebels being subsumed by the Establishment has always intrigued me).

I just had to cross the road to see the rest - it says I always knew you would come back.

My artist friend, living in Christchurch, has been making art based on her experiences walking around the city. See at Lynne Cameron Artworks.

Meanwhile back home, although snow is forecast, Spring is coming,,,,

Spring is on a delayed arrival here--no signs to speak of. -7c this morning. Maybe next week?

I am so glad you are enjoying the posts on NZ, and it is a prunus (nigra I think) in my daughter's garden - sp pterry this year with more blossom than ever before.

I am thoroughly enjoying your trip to New Zealand so am looking forward to more. Were there a lot of murals which were words rather than pictures? Interesting difference to Glasgow, anyway, where very few of them feature words. Spring, hmm? Well, the daffodils are out and the early cherry blossom but there was thick, white frost this morning so only maybe.

Interestingly I think more of the word ones are to be found among the 'illegal' ones and the picures are more likely to be sponsored....as in most big cities as you enter or leave by train you find miles of them - often done at night wearing balaclavas....a cultural phenomenon I am sure must be the subject of many PhD's.

loving your pictures & reminiscences of NZ...keep them coming.

there's a city not too far from me (Julia, it's Steubenville) that had murals all around the city depicting city life through the ages. I wrote to the city council, trying to find a map so I could find all of them. never got a response. I found about 6, so if there were more, I missed them.

cold here & yesterday had a bit of snow, but I did notice the hyacinths are starting to poke through. love the smell of hyacinths - not everyone does.

I love the smell of hyacinths too. I am sure there must be information online about the interesting murals in Steubenville or is there a tourist information office? Sounds like you would like to see them all Cathy.

I bet everyone who sees the top part of the 'I always knew' sign has a different idea for the ending... would love to know what some of them are! Would be a great way to get someone into a store... it made you cross the street to find out!
