And a few new items on the nature table. The witchhazel, hamamelis mollis, with its curious scent which is musky and citrusy at the same time, three diferent kinds of pine, and ivy.

What are you finding?

A question about papers - Do you keep old letters? I have lots and can't think what to do with them. What are your thoughts?

Hi Freda, re letters - I struggle to discard things like this so I have a little book where I write a one line reference - e.g
Letter, Uncle Frank, 16/12/15 not well, may be last one - said he remembered Lake district holiday
Then I can discard the letter in comfort knowing it's gone but not completely forgotten - of course I never look at the book again and eventually I will discard that too but discarding things is like going down steps to the river - eventually you are at the bottom step and you have to let things go - some have fewer steps than others (and are better at brevity)

That is a really interesting idea. Thank you. I wouldn’t have thought of that.

I love the hamamelis. Such a cheerful colour in the winter. I haven't checked ours for a week but it wasn't flowering when I last looked. I cut some Sekka willow rods today and popped them in a vase . They have little grey pussy willows just starting to fatten up . Their texture fascinates me and I love the contrast of the grey against the dark red stems. As for keeping letters , yes I treasure them , and found it impossible to part with them when decluttering. Rereading them brings back so many wonderful memories. So I put them in a cardboard box marked 'to be destroyed unopened', on my death . It was an idea from Swedish death cleaning.

The Willow sounds lovely. I have a few dark corrnus
stems in a vase. That idea for the letters is another interesting one. Thanks.

Your photo of your winter table and candle gives a lovely warming glow, very welcome on a freezing morning like this.

The nature table and candle look so beautiful and uplifting.

I 'pruned' my old letters during lockdown - kept a few, took photographs of others and did shred some. I think I may shed some more when (and if) I ever get around to editing photos. No-one else will be interested in these letters; I'm keeping them just for myself and the memories they evoke.
I do like Mike's idea of step by step clearing, as well as Mary B's (remember reading that in Swedish Death Clearing).

Breaking the ice on the birdbath has been a daily and sometimes quite lengthy task but it must be done as there is an exceptionally stupid pigeon in my garden who can't tell the difference between ice and water and repeatedly hammers away at the ice.
Letters are so difficult to throw out but I read through the ones I had and then kept one from each year . At the moment it is photographs I am trying to reduce in numbers and am finding it practically impossible to throw them out even the ones of people who were dead before I was born.
