Simply..do a good deed....

There are not many posts in this category (as I have said before we were taught to be modest about them).

I went out for a walk at dusk and found the road like a river although it had not rained very  much, so i investigated and found the ditch which runs along the roadside blocked. Although by this time it was getting dark I couldn't resist going back to the shed for a rake and clearing  the leaves and mud that were blocking it - the satisfaction of hearing the water gurgling along again was worth it!

And I got a nice photograph of the house from a different angle as I walked back home almost an hour later..

Don't be shy and tell us of your latest good deed!

NB  I'm sorry that sometimes my replies to your comments do not appear directly below  but get mixed up and appear in the wrong order. So confusing Weebly!

What a lovely picture of the house with the light in your studio - you can really see the dramatic gable end.
Well done for the great deed - I am sure your neighbours will be pleased. I am not sure what my latest good deed is - sometimes you just help out automatically without thinkng much of it at the time - you are just happy to help.

I can see you were all taught to be modest about your good deeds too!
The picture does make the house look much bigger than it is Viv, don't you think? I like it though.

It's very satisfying to see something that needs doing and be able to put it right isn't it?
We have become brainwashed into thinking it's someone else's job, usually the council's!
Often a few minutes effort will deal with the problem.
One of my neighbours regularly weeds the communal steps near her house. Her example has got us all doing our bit and beach cleaning too.
Often noticing someone needing a little help brings its own reward, a smile and a small bubble of joy inside.
I'm sure you will also have been proud of your newly claimed shed, hard though it must have been at the time, being able to place your hand on the rake straight away.

It's lovely when someone starts something and others join in to help. It was great not to have to climb over anything but just walk in and take the rake from its hook on the wall!

Well done for the good deed above, also thank you for posting the poppy pictures. I didn't comment on them because it seemed that anything I had to say was inadequate. Have done a good deed today for my son, but that was to repay him for his patience in listening to me over the weekend.

What a wonderful place to come home to!

I was on the receiving end of a good deed today. Come to think of it I also was last week when Julia, Lotta en you Freda offered very welcome advice how to handle my overload of paper stuff. It seems fitting that my brain didn't want to come up with the translation of 'ruthless' in Dutch at first. Somehow baby-steps and ruthless do not go very well together but I am happy to announce I've made a good start.

Lovely to see your studio glowing Freda... hope you do to when you are in it now! Isn't it satisfying to be able to solve a problem like a blocked ditch? That modesty thing is so deeply ingrained isn't it? I notice my reluctance to even find the words to describe one! Good deeds are contagious though aren't they... I came across one of my neighbours doing one the other day on my way back from a walk, and before I had thought about it I stopped and helped her finish it. And your post might inspire some more good deeds... who knows!

As I said - everyone here was brought up like me! At least when it comes to talking about your good deeds.

Freda, i love this photo! i thought i had a good picture in my mind of your tiny spot on the planet, but had not visualized the large mountain behind your house...and oh, doesn't it look cozy and inviting? you are a gem to be such a good neighbor!
my own efforts are similar...i try to just do whatever needs to be done: tidy up dropped papers in a public bathroom; put something back on a shelf in a store, or certainly, re-shelve a book properly at the library!. (i am guessing that cathy does this as well!) just think if everyone did this!

I had to laugh at reshelving books at the library, Julia. that's how I got my part time job there...I was always there, waiting for josh to look for a book or do some homework. I couldn't just sit there, so i'd shelf read (make sure the books are in the proper spot) & the librarian said I might as well get paid for it. that was 20+ yrs ago. I've given up the part time job, but still volunteer - my perk is I can have a book(s) 2 weeks overdue with no fines. plus, I get to see all new books before they go out for the public to see. works for me!

It did feel very welcoming especially as I was throghly wet by then! Unspoken good deeds must make the world a much nicer place. Brava all the quiet good deeders!

I wondered if you know of David Sedaris (the storyteller, often serialised on BBC radio 4): he started picking up litter on his daily walks, bought himself a litter-picking stick, and the litter-picking has become a daily activity during which he meets many interesting people. He's even been asked to provide evidence to Parliamentary committees about it.

What a difference one person can make! I hadn't heard of this Susan, so thank you.
