Simply..enchantment....

My word for 2019.

I'm still trying to work out what I mean by it!

I know what I don't mean. For me it has nothing to do with wizards, fantasy and fairytales, legends and mythology. No casting of spells. No crystals. It's not even about magic.

It's more about wonder.

Wonder at real things in nature, like snow falling down, or a meadow of wild flowers, or just the way a shaft of sunlight strikes the water. Or at a live performance of dance or music by real people that is so good you are transported, or amazement at the skill of an artist or filmaker so dedicated and patient, the infectious giggles of two tiny children being a little cheeky and testing  their harassed father's patience on the ferry.....it is everywhere if I am open to it.

Even today in Glasgow - a really dirty grey day, crowds of busy shoppers returning Christmas presents that were wrong, that slightly aggressive atmosphere around serious bargain seekers, traffic fumes and noise as I waited at the bus stop in the gathering gloom when the fumes seemed smellier and the lights seemed harsher and I was getting tired of waiting. But much amplified above the hubbub floated the voice of a young street musician singing Hallelujah and it was suddenly beautiful - all of it. That someone would even do such a thing. That human beings sing in streets. A new atmosphere was created in that moment. Enchantment can send a delightful shiver up your spine!

Do you remember this?

I am going to love this word.

Wonder- perfect word and well chosen. So many people rush through life without appreciating anything around them. Enjoy 2019

Sometimes you go somewhere with someone, and because they are open to life like you, everything becomes uplifted. That's what you do for us - hone in on things we would have loved had we seen/heard them. Always conscious of sounding too flattering -that would be abhorrent to me -but this post is so beautiful and inspirational. Allelujah.

I know what you mean, Freda. We drove past a refinery today that usually looks like a blight on the landscape, but the angle of winter sunlight blinking off domed storage tanks and the white clouds of steam trailing from a forest of stacks into the blue air suddenly looked...beautiful. I could imagine myself in another world and began writing its story in my head. Later, we emerged from a store into a twilight sky of spun glass. I was enchanted. Sometimes I miss the wonder amidst the ordinary because I forget to look.

But when you do look you clearly see with an artist's eye! Lovely description Judy. Thanks for sharing.

In my opinion, anything sung by Jeff Buckley is sublime, and tugs at my soul.

May I recommend on YouTube, Buckley's 'Corpus Christi Carol' (for those who prefer restraint) and 'Grace' (for those who like to 'let it all hang out').

Enchantment is such a great word it reminds me of the feelings that I had as a child when I came across something new and exciting and you cannot look away as you are completely captivated. To see the world with a childs eyes is sheer enchantment.

We just need to give ourselves a little 'time off' now and then to be able to see that way again I think Viv.

OH! After listening to your video/audio of the song you posted my heart said OF COURSE! And I was not looking for a word. Have simply enjoyed your concept of a word for the year. My word for 2019 is Hallelujah! My heart brought tears to my eyes. Thank you, Freda.

I believe there is an American hymn called 'Hallelujah Anyway' . Isn't that a wonderful title? Enjoy your word all year Mary R.
