I'll still have candles - but with fresh fruit rather than tinsel.
Have you cleared away Christmas?
..we had a family meal and took down the tree and decorations and as I always do, I observed how badly this room needs decorated (never do it though! Maybe this year...). I'll still have candles - but with fresh fruit rather than tinsel. Have you cleared away Christmas?

I have just taken down the beautiful Douglas Fir tree and vacuumed up the needles. The needles will be put to good use in the garden around acid-loving plants. May 2019 bring you all good things and heartfelt thanks for your inspiring writing and photos.

Not yet, not all. Not having a Christmas tree and after removing the Christmas wreaths there are no tired needles falling anymore. Now I can go slow with the rest. It gives me both the time and mindfulness to create new islands of beauty.

Shiny decs came down mid-week and holly yesterday (Saturday) but the cards are still around. These will be sorted, new contact details and so on extracted and will then go to the 'card bank' in the local supermarket for recycling. As you say, thoughts turning to the new!

Really only decorated the mantel and that was cleared earlier this week. Had a tiny tree with lights and no ornaments on a cabinet (no one but us here at Christmas--we went to the adult children's homes for events) and that comes down today. We were gifted a very large Poinsettia - a mottled greenish/mauve colour. Not quite sure what I will do with that--leaves are steadily dropping. Must read up on it.

It's not so much following tradition as being in love with xmas decorations that means my decorations are up till tonight. It will be a wrench to take the wreaths and some of the lights away they have given me such pleasure. I do have a beautiful bunch of flowers which will fill the gap a bit but I will miss my lights.

We didn't decorate as such. Never have a tree. We have fairy lights that are up all year round but only really get switched on at Christmas, and lots of candles. Red ones over Christmas, all white now for New Year. Cards taken down on New Year's Day. The open fire is the centrepiece at Christmas in our living space. It is a very small room and filling it with decorations would feel horribly cluttered to me as I cannot stand excess stuff of any kind! I like to keep it as simple and minimal as possible plus it suits the cosy room. In other people's spaces decorations can look wonderful and I appreciate it. (I'm not bah humbug by any means!) I like to experiment with what is really necessary and that for me this year was enough.

Candles are wonderful - I would hate to be without them, or flowers. Sounds like you got it just right Lynn.

Being away for Christmas and with decorations still packed in removal boxes meant our house was rather bare this year. It did make made for a very quick clearing though!

I am keeping my tree and decorations up for a bit longer as we are having our neighbours over for the Galette des Rois next weekend. This cake is traditionally eaten on 12th Night, but people tend to indulge in this delicious treat all through the month of January.

We also have one in Switzerland - Dreikönigskuchen, a slightly sweet bread with sugar and almonds on top, where everyone pulls a roll off and s/he who gets the one with a little plastic king inside gets to be king for the day and wear the golden (paper) crown that comes with the bread...

I decorated a lot less this year and most is gone - except the tree in our upstairs snug! Not losung any needles and so pretty with its antique baubles discovered in MIL‘s cellar, so it gets a few days grace...
