Simply..golden hop....

I love he brilliant leaves of the golden hop, humulus lupus aureus against the black walls of the house. It grows quickly to about 10 feet or more every year, and tries to get into the house! You cut it to the ground at the end of summer and the bines are useful for making wreaths.

I also grow it on a wigwam of blue painted canes, where this year it has been joined by clematis 'Dark Eyes'. (£1 from the supermarket.)

I, too, love looking at the contrast of your luminous hops against the dark ship-lap wall, when you show photos of them.
It makes me think of Prospect Cottage (Derek Jarman's house) which I'm yet to visit. (It was saved, by public donation over Lockdown, from private purchase, to remain as a resource for artists and the public.)

Oh yes, Susan. Freda's house is reminiscent of Prospect Cottage, but in a completely different setting. I would also like to visit Derek Jarman's garden and go back to the pretty town of Rye which isn't far from it.

When you do go, Grace, if you visit Rye as well, do visit Winchelsea. It's a unique small walled town, which was on the coast but now, is inland. (I think that Lucille lives there, and may tell you more.)

You are giving me lots of garden inspiration here Freda. I wouldn't have thought of growing clematis and hops in a pot. Lovely!

The hop is in the ground, but the clematis is in a pot beside it. I think the hop might overwhelm anything in the same pot!

The contrast of golden leaves and the black woodwork is wonderful and I am fascinated by the plant growing up the canes. I use golden hop up canes to lighten a very shady corner but mine doesn't behave nearly as well as yours and it often ends up collapsing under the weight of the hop. Maybe you could give cane wigwam building courses online 😃

I wind string around the Keynes and coax the hop to grow along the strings, instead of straight up the canes. Maybe this makes it more stable and less top-heavy?
