Simply..good timing....

I've just watched a programme called The Truth About Getting Fit in which Dr Michael Mosley describes how to get maximum results with minimum effort.

Along with your encouraging words just what I needed to know! (BBC4 iPlayer and parts can be seen on YouTube.)

Apart from going out to fetch wood I've been lucky enough to have  a cosy day reading by the fire. It's been blowing a gale all day and the noise of the north westerly wind coming down the glen is still very loud although it was forecast to subside by now. I have however done a little bit of (effective) exercise.

Yay!

There are so many programs on diet and fitness at the moment - I understand that not all fitness types suit everyone and for some people it can cause more harm or do nothing - but unless you go through some expensive testing you wouldn't know which is suitable and have the most impact - I suspect it might be the same for diets, that there is no one right way.
I don't think I saw this program though - might take a look I am always interested in the new research and what they uncover.

It's trial and error to find what suits you isn't it Viv - and we are all different and that's why there are so many I suppose! I do know better what suits me than I used ot....

'A cosy day reading by the fire' while a gale blows with all its noise and force down the glen.

I think you've hit on a basic human instinct here - that a gale outside increases the value of the security inside, and the cosiness inside: the fire, the half-reading, half day-dreaming by it makes the storm outside seem welcome and pleasurable. 'When the shelter is sure, the storm is good.'

This is an idea that really appeals to me.

I am laughing out loud Rosemary because although it was lovely and I just gave myself over to it I woke this morning to find that the recycling bin had blown over and the contents were scattered all over the garden - good ecercise picking that lot up!!

Perhaps your general life provides you the weight lifting exercise
( hauling wood, gardening) and aerobic exercise ( walking, swimming, gardening) that you need. You’re busy tending to travels, visiting art show, house care, and gardening - all feed your soul and body.

i am conscious of that and try to build in a little stretching eg having the things I use most - tea, coffee etc - on a slightly higher shelf that I have to reach to, and I find that in the city I walk much further without even being aware of it. In Venice we walked 18,000 steps one day and I wasn't even tired! I do all I can to avoid ever having to go to a gym....

Wowsers! Freda, i had a look at the youtube video. I would find that extremely challenging at my age and state of fitness. I could not do that! But one can start slowing and work up to a goal. My approach is pick something doable. Ie..how many pushups can i do? 5? Ok. I will do 5 every day for a week, and then i will try for 7 each day..in a year, i’ll be doing better! As for those squats that dr mosely was doing..that is an easy one for me. Every time i reach for something on a low shlef, i do a full squat and then come up with just my leg strength. Same with “squeegieing” down the shower walls...full squat down and up again..in my shower that is 13 squats....just don’t slip! Pick something you want to do, do what you can, and maybe 2 more reps...and get out the gold stars!

And as for walking, there is always the “get a dog” solution!

Don't want a dog/cat/pet of any kind except the tame robins which look after themselves when I am not here!

I;m with you and Gail on this one (and have to say I'm feeling rather pleased with myself because I can do that YouTube thing and if three times a week is enough then this is for me!). The friend in the village I used to walk with has moved away and that has made a difference sadly.

the sun was shining brightly this afternoon & after feeling like a lump because I confessed to wanting to burrow in winter, I decided to take a walk. had to leave the gloves/scarf on the porch, it was that nice out. but when I got away from the protection of the houses, I could feel the wind. not hard enough to blow the trash bins around, but a headwind for me for sure. i'm sure that burned another calorie or 2.

It all counts Cathy! I burned a few gathering up the litter from the garden. The sun shone here today too - hurrah!
