Simply..have to....

..in my old age, be able to put my suitcase in the overhead locker on a plane, manage the stairs in the Paris Metro, put on my socks without having to sit down, get in and out of the hammock and the low slung leather chair in the study, get dressed without falling over, push the wheelbarrow and lift pots up onto the porch, run for a bus, carry my own shopping,  climb the ladders to prune the clematis round the window (I always have someone hold the steps!)...

What would you add?

All this may only be possible if I make some effort now, thus the recent review of the list of the eight things a human needs to be fit and well, at any age. All very basic common sense, but I someitmes need reminding and I think I now have a clearer picture of what I need to work on. I hope it has been of some interest to you too.

I was once visiting my uncle in Edinburgh and as we hopped on and off buses I casually asked Uncle John do you ever take taxis? To which he replied ,equally casually, I will when I am older.  He was 96 at the time.

I hope we are all as lucky!

That's quite a list Freda ! Seems pretty comprehensive to me . Funny thing is , that I have never yet mastered the art of using a hammock safely .
Your uncle sounds like mine . He was also 96 when he told me he was too busy and had too many interests to grow old .

A little chuckle at 96 year olds. I have never put my socks on standing up. Will have to try that … no maybe not😂. Loved the list tho. Had to ask people to help me with my overhead bag when traveling and my back not quite healed from compression fracture. I was truly surprised that the stewards did not want to help and there were some passengers that did not want to either. Would not even try a hammock these days. Would add to your list, Freda … be able to get up and down off the floor or ground in the event of a fall. I actually practice that.

Good idea to practice and to do balance exercises, so we don’t fall over in the first place! But of course it is not all in our hands, and accidents happen, and a lot of disabilities like troubled, backs, and visual impairment or not seen by others.

Mary, great idea about practicing getting up off the floor
I’m going to do that
Freda, your list is good and practical. I’ll do all but the overhead lift (worthless left shoulder). The list idea is terrific

This is something I simply had to do on Thursday: exit late-arriving train, 'run' through the wall of heat and the wall of people, along platform pulling case, holding bags. Scramble up two long flights of steps with case etc, run along gantry, come down two flights, bumping case step by step, 'run' down platforms 2, 1A, !B and !C, climb into train with 50 secs. to spare..I don't recommend this to anyone and I hope I never have to do it again !

Brava Rosemary! I bet you were rather pleased with yourself once you got your breath back.
