So many houses to rescue!

Most people in the Hebrides live in bungalows, but there are quite a number of Scandinavian style kit houses being built which are both energy efficient and to my eye, fit well into the landscape.

The second photograph is a hostel.

That hostel looks amazing and the old cottages so picturesque. When we visited Skye we visited a croft and the reality of living inside one in years gone by was so different! Those kit houses look wonderful with so much light and a simple layout. I have seen a few featured over the last few years in Coast magazine. Sarah x

And to answer your question: Mellon Udrigle is a tiny village near Laide, Achnasheen, in Wester Ross. My memories are dating back to times when it was a tranquil place like North Uist seems to be.

Some parts of Scotland are still tranquil Cath, though now linked by the internet as well as ferries to the rest of the world...

The little white bungalows seem to have their own personalities somehow, especially the one in your third picture. I'm more drawn to the designs of the Scandinavian style houses though and I imagine the warmth and energy efficiency would be a huge plus during wild stormy winter weather. I wonder how the thatch stays on the bungalows! How do you pronounce 'Uist' Freda?

The bunglows I refer to are modern ones (too boring to photograph!) but like you I love the modern ones. If you look closely you might see that the thatch is held down by large stones on ropes.
'You-ist' The highland accent is lovely and people switch easily between Gaelic and English.

Definitely on my list of places to visit. Those houses remind of the Katie Morag stories my children loved when they were small!

Read all of the katie morag to my children and now to the grands...:-) i'll show them these pictures too...thanks Freda...i LOVE these structures...they are simple and serene....we could all live in simple homes like these if we "tidied" properly....
