Simply..home again....

..and on with more down to earth matters.

Do you have a place you feel to be your second home? Not in the literal sense of owning property there, but in the sense of feeling at home, feeling you belong. York was my home for many happy years and revisiting it can be rather bittersweet, but the beauty of it and the layers of history so visible on it's every surface always enchant me..

I am not naive about it's problems. Like most cities it has homelessness and pollution, over commercilisation, rowdy hen nights and stag parties and crowds, but as in many English cathedral cities there is a sense of continuity and tradition  that appeals to me on a deep level. Centuries of it, and York Minster has seen it all.

I think that I feel at home in places that have an ancient rootedness, yet with some degree of an open outlook and lightness of feel: Wells in Somerset.
On a completely different tack, I feel inexplicably fascinated with Russia and the Baltic States, despite having no known ties to these regions or cultures.

No longer live in San Antonio, TX but still feels like home in my mind. It is not in any way the city it once was. Yearn occasionally for the good years in coastal town of Port Aransas where we had a 2nd home for many years. Attempt to live in the Now in deeper South Texas.

Newcastle upon Tyne always feels like home to me, despite the fact I left there 40 years ago (how on earth is it that long ago?). I love the accent and the friendliness of the people, plus a vibrant city life on many levels.
But York would be a very close second.

There are several places in Denmark that feel like second home to me .

Perthshire, all around Dunkeld to Aberfeldy always feels comforting and familiar when I visit. My father's family farmed in the area and though I have only visited for short spells it always feels "right". The scenery, the colour of the stone in the buildings and the light always give me a sense of ease and belonging.

I loved reading about all the different places, and all the different reasons for feeling a sense of belonging. Thank you all for sharing.

I do love York for all the reasons you mentioned Freda and also because I lived there at a time in my life when there was so much to discover - including friendships which I have kept for 40 years. Even after 30 years Winchester doesn't feel like such a good fit for me though great in other ways. There's also a small town in France that my family has been visiting for 75 years but that's for holidays not a home

We have both been lucky to live in beautiful places. And to have such beautiful friendships which have lasted for so many years! X
