Simply..how do you know when..

..your bathroom scales need a new battery?

When you step on and off them four times and get four different readings!

So did I really lose those two pounds? My waistband tells me I lost something...

How often do you weigh yourself?

And have you lost any weight?

Gardening for several hours in hot sunshine today must have used up a few calories.

The waistband is definitely telling me good things. But the routine has been totally kicked into the long grass because the builders are back. The meal at lunchtime has become the meal late at night and because I hate cooking then.. with wine. Sigh. It will get better. The plaster now needs a week to dry..
Is that gyp? So pretty.

Long grass!!! I am paying now for my policy of cutting down on mowing by letting the grass grow. Sigh. Enjoy your late night meals for now! All your comments started my day off with a giggle - thank you!.

All these sighs this morning! But thank you for making me laugh - there is a seagull sitting on a post outside laughing too!

If you stand on scales on a thick piled carpet your weight goes up by two stones - I know 'cos I've just tried it!!!!! So on a hard surface I appear to have lost nothing, hey ho!

I am chuckling at the comments this early morning - what a lovely start you have all made to my day! We're in this together/it will happen/we can do it - especially as we all have a sense of humour!

I went to weigh myself just now and found the scales had vanished.
My son is packing to leave for New York and needs them to check his baggage allowance.
I am comfort eating. So perhaps it is kinder not to look.

I laughed at your first sentence Lucille, but then felt a little sad. (Is he holidaying or moving there?) Comfort eating is a whole new story and I need to give some thought to that myself. Have a kind-to-yourself day today.

Moving for six or seven years. Other son too quite by coincidence, but not for so long.
We are at full tilt at present so when they all go it is going to be very very quiet and yes, a little sad for all the brave talk of giving them wings and letting them fly etc.

However in other news I have had a v. short haircut so must have lost some weight. Did you go for a change of style?

The scales are an instrument of torture for so many women. I like Mireille Guiliano's approach - the zipper test. Freda, I wouldn't replace the scales, I'd let your trousers do the talking!

Personally I haven't weighed myself since about 1987 - and I've maintained a steady weight in all that time. I may gain a little over Winter (pants a little tighter) but I always shed it early Spring. I also allow for the fact that at certain times of the month there can be a bit of bloating - clothes with a more comfortable fit are a kindness to oneself.

Everyone's question will be HOW Madeliene? How have you maintained a steady weight since 1987? I too like Mireille's attitude - I shall re-read her book today....

Hi Freda,

I've maintained my weight with a macrobiotic diet/lifestyle. It is honestly effortless - my partner says I could 'eat for England' because I eat plenty including healthy snacks. Before discovering macrobiotics I had ruined my health and my metabolism with extreme dieting for 7 years. My metabolism was so slow from dieting that I could gain plenty of weight eating only one meal a day. Macrobiotics helped me regain my health and maintain a healthy but slim weight without effort (ok, the effort comes in the cooking of course!). Without deprivation and struggle might be a better way to put it.

I am glad you asked the question Freda because I feel very sad to know many women who are following one punishing diet after another, and steadily gaining weight still.

The Complete Macrobiotic Diet: 7 steps to feel fabulous, look vibrant and think clearly by Denny Waxman is a great place to start exploring if anyone is interested.

My scales live under a chest of drawers in the spare room and on the rare occasions they see daylight there is at least an inch of dust on the surface which must surely account for a pound or two? I weigh myself about once a decade... as long as my clothes fit I don't mind! I'd go by the waistband Freda, after all you may be gaining muscle from all the mowing :-)

I won't be stepping on the scales until I get a new battery anyway. Nice to think I may be developing some muscle!

Thanks for the link Madeleine - I see you can read a lot of it (most of it?) on the Amazon page - will report back!

Oh that is major Lucille. You must have done a brilliant job for them to be confident enough to do it! And you may have visits? A big adjustment though....I stick pretty much with the same haircut (so no weight loss there!)
