Simply..how do you waken?

What wakens you every morning?

This morning I awoke to the sound of two angry men in London shouting right in my ear about politics (radio alarm).

Given that I was in a lovely cottage in the peaceful Highland town of Narin on the Moray Firth this seemed incongruous, and disturbing if not downright insane! (Sorry C!)

I resolved to always switch off someone else's alarm and on the long journey home I tried all the different sounds on my phone alarm to find the most delightful and uplifting. It is called twinkle. :-) Sounds corny I know but at least it makes me smile. Call me idealistic but I want to start my day gently - ideally silent or to the sound of birdsong, but when I have to use an alarm I will make sure it is my own.

Sorry to hear about your sister. Hope she makes a full and speedy recovery.
I got rid of our radio alarm after being woken with the announcement that we were at war in the Gulf ! Not nice! For years I woke to the sound of birdsong but I have become quite deaf so now hope the increase in daylight wakes me. At least it is a quiet and gentle way to wake up.

Thank you Mary. My sister is doing well. Waking up with the light is how nature intended I think!

I’m glad to hear your sister is on the mend. For the last few years I’ve been using a Lumie sunrise lamp on the mornings I need to be up at a specific time. It’s fab and gentle and never fails to wake me. Also a plus for me is that as the light gently increases my brain seems to register it as being a sunny day and even when I finally realise it is grey and cold outside my brain chemistry has already gone down the happy sunny track! I wonder if they do a travel version? Or maybe there is an iPhone app that does something similar... if not, there should be!

I used a Lumie lamp for a few years and it worked well for me too. You could make your fortune Lotta by creating the app!

Wishing your sister a good recovery.

I know what you mean about someone else's alarm. When I did a great deal of business travel, hotel radio/clock alarms set by the previous occupant could be a hazard. Over the years, I have invariably woken up before any alarm I set as my mind/body seems to act like its own alarm system, except that it usually activates a bit earlier than any mechanical device.

Thanks Mary. I use a traditional alarm clock at home and almost always waken just before it goes off...don't really understand how that happens.

When i travel and need an alarm, i find the old-fashioned alarm setting of “radar” on my phone to be somehow comforting...:-) it reminds me of sleeping at my grandmother’s house and her loud-ticking bedside clock. Otherwise, i don’t sleep with a clock at all anymore. My body seems to know what time it is, and i just get up. And besides, if sleep is not going well, who needs to see the time constantly..and creeping by so slowly!

What a nice association! The night after my sister's surgery I simply could not sleep and realised I was hungry. I cooked a nice meal at 4am - candle, music, napkin.....went back to bed and slept till 8

Wishing your sister a good recovery.

Sometimes I wake up once or twice thinking it is time to get up when it isn't but usually I wake up without an alarm. The time varies depending on how well my night was.

Thank you Cath for your good wishes for my sister. She is finding she is sleeping a lot and I am sure that is good for her recovery!

I think there must be a post missing as I can only see commiserations for your sister in the comments. I hope that she is making a good recovery. I wake naturally but too early so listen to Farming Today if it’s time for that. The Shipping forecast will send me back to sleep if I’m lucky. Shouting men are switched off at any time of the day.

There are a lot of men shouting out there just now! I wrote a bit in yesterday's comments about my sister being ill. Thank you for your kind wishes. She is doing really well after major surgery.

I do hope your sister is recovering well, Freda.
I have a fairly gentle alarm ringtone on my phone to get me up for work around 6.15. It gets switched off on weekends whenever possible. My worst ever alarm experience was when sleeping in my nephew's bedroom - he would have been around 10 at the time - to be woken by his robot alarm clock. I really thought I was going to have a heart attack!

I opted for Crickets after reading your post. Thank you. Even if their chirping sounds a bit robotic, it makes a lovely change from the jangling I had become accustomed to.
