We visited the Ardfern studio of artist Hannah Tofts whose warm welcome and wonderful energy inspired us. Do browse around her website - she teaches, writes books, gardens, cooks, campaigns against plastics in our seas (she has a seven year collection of plastics from beach cleans!) and paints. A colourful antidote to this winter weather..

Very creative. Sadly amazing at how much plastics she has collected, but, also sadly, not surprising.

I rather like that she is creative with it though. A new angle!

I wish I had her energy! It is impossible to avoid plastics but awareness is rising.....and meanwhile we do what we can.

Living in a big city, the quantity of plastic waste is truly shocking, between what is on sale in supermarkets and the take-away culture. Retailers shouldn't waste any time in following the initiative of the supermarket in the Netherlands which has just opened a plastic-free aisle (the world's first apparently). Artists can do a lot to raise awareness of the scale of the problem.

I am really excited to hear of the plastic-free aisle idea. It would be so interesting to see how people respond to that! I do hope it spreads. There is such a long way to go but we are on the road...

I’ve been ill and got totally behind on your blog, freda.. but i really enjoyed reading about ardfern (beautiful!) and hanna tofts. Yes, it is so difficult to avoid plastic! I follow several excellent blogs which advocate a zero-plastic lifestyle, and i’m aspiring! Also the site of a woman who cleans san diego beach every morning, before the tide takes the trash back out to sea..it is shocking how so many people are treating our world like a garbage dump. Even a small change can help...like stopping using a plastic straw in your drink.
