Simply..joie de vivre....

Joie de vivre according to Mireille Guiliano, is in direct proporotion to how much pleasure you know how to derive from every aspect of living.

It's easier to find on sunny warm days with bluebells strewing your path, luminous at dusk..

I like that she suggests it's not a given, but it is something you can learn.

Would you agree?

Perhaps you will discuss it with each other here while I take a short blog break?  I love when you do that!

I always think of joie de vivre as being our natural state and that it's our thoughts/beliefs/emotional baggage that we've picked up along the way that obscure it. So for me it feels like more of an uncovering, a letting go, than a learning - keeping on cleaning the windows of ourselves until the light can shine through again...

What a lovely way of looking at it Lotta.

Very Blakean, Lotta. Thinking about his lovely words about cleansing the doors of perception. Find being out of doors in a natural or wild environment the best thing for connecting to that joie de vie.

There are some few people (not many in my sphere) who seem to exude joie de vivre as a naturally as any other genetic characteristic. Always carrying that joy with them regardless of circumstances. I've only met a very few people like that. I can't say I am one of them and perhaps not at a stage in my life where I want to work that hard to make it an everyday activity. Some parts of life simply don't fill me with joy. C'est la vie.

Those people do stay in your mind don't they? Not everything can fill one with joy of course....

Definitely a state of mind - I think the Quakers come close to having a consistent positivity of life and finding the good and pleasurable in everything.
Hope you not going to be away for long.

The Quaker belief that there is something of God in everyone is very positive.

I think you can cultivate it, for sure. We've all heard the saying 'what you focus your attention on increases' and I think that's how happiness works. The more good you notice, well, the more good you notice!

PS stunning Autumn trees and gorgeous weather here in Oz at the moment - I call it 'impossible to be miserable weather'!

Glad you are enjoying your 'impossible to be miserable weather' Madeleine - I've just had a few days of that too!

I have one particular friend who LIVES and breathes joie de vivre. By chance, just before i read your post, Freda, she had sent me this quote: Life is not about how we survive the storm. It is about how we dance in the rain. (This was probably because i was whinging about the flooding in my basement.) hahaha
I find it is possible to dance in a flood, but you need nice boots to make it really fun.

I always think that you have a lot of joie de vivre Julia! It comes through your comments even when you're up to your knees in a flooded basement... Must be the nice boots - I'll have to get some! :-)

Thank you Lotta...:-) you are right, it might be the boots! They are navy blue with big white daisies on them...very helpful in any work situation. I was also going to add that women have a special ability to laugh their way out of their troubles, when they commiserate. But i can think of lots of men who do that too. We can laugh or we can die from a thousand cuts...that is how i see complaining. (Still working on not complaining, though!)

I do agree with Lotta here!

To me Joie de vivre is very much connected with resilience. The connection being my ability to bounce back after running into the obstacles life offers me continuously. And that is where vitality comes in. The more tired I am - physically or mentally - the more difficult it is to bounce back.
So maybe what needs to be re-learned or uncovered is selfcare and compassion. Joie the vivre might flourish on that soil.

I definatelythink you have a very valid point Cath. Joie de vivre is very tricky when you are over tired or stressed! I am a pretty positive person most of the time, especially when everything is going smoothly and to my satisfaction!!!! All the while I've been writing this comment "Always look on the bright side of life "has been singing away in my head. Not quite the same thing... PennyL

My daughter has that song on her phone - she is a 'glass half full' person without doubt.

You are right about self care and self compassion - so easily overlooked...let's relearn it!

I am not bereft of joie de vivre, but am committed to cultivating as much of it as I am capable of. Stop. Look. Listen. Be quiet. Breathe. I was practicing those today as I perched on the garden bench under the birch watering as much of the back garden as I could reach with my hose. It was such a lovely break between potting my geraniums and herbs and planting my experimental Irish moss. I think the small, blue columbine and bleeding heart were especially pleased that I had taken the time to admire them and offer refreshment.
