I hope you are finding it fun too!

It still astonishes and delights me that I can sit here in (Oops! Nearly said it!). In a mystery place and have a conversation about local identity with people from all around the world...I love it.

What a wonderfully diverse world we inhabit.

Will you celebrate it with me by telling us something about the distinctiveness of where you live?

Another small architectural clue on the left....

What comes to mind first is our language. There's even a dictionary for what they call Pittsburghese. Most notorious is 'yinz' instead of 'you'.

There are dictionaries for Glaswegian too! (known for being humourous and self-deprecating. 'Yous' for 'you'. Local accents vary hugely in our small country.

Here goes again. Since half-timbered construction seems to be a big clue, and the style seems more like the "Western School" of half-timbered construction, I'm guessing the West Midlands. For a big pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey stab, how about the "Black & White" trail in Herefordshire?

As for distinctive elements of where we live. Well, at this time of year, particularly in February and March, it seems like most of Toronto is trying to get away to someplace very warm -- usually Mexico or the Caribbean. In the summer, because of the tendency toward heat and high humidity, a lot of people flee the city at every opportunity to go to "cottage country", which for many people is north and north-east of Toronto in the region of Muskoka, the Kawartha Lakes and along Georgian Bay and Lake Simcoe.

I didn't know there was a Western School - I'm learning so much! I have been on that lovely Black and White trail, but I;m not in Herefordshire Alison...Warm sounds very appealing.

I live in a Paris suburb. There is a very eclectic mix of architectural styles here and it is rare to find two houses built on the same model. My detective skills tell me that you are somewhere south of Hadrien's Wall. Am I right in saying that plaque says An English Listed Building?

I am south of Hadrian's Wall and must go and have another look at that plaque - I just assumed it was the name of the cottage...Lovely to hear from Paris!

At this time of year most distinctive of my city are the celebrations just behind us again for another year. Carnaval. It is a long weekend (friday through tuesday) feast with dressing up, music, fun (and unfun when there's too much alcohol in play), and all kinds of amusing ancient traditions.

These pre Lent celebrations are such a good idea, but we don't have anything like them here.

Well you have definitely travelled south, not seen many timber and thatch buildings in Scotland.
Down here cottages were traditionally made of cob.. mud held together with straw. The walls are extremely thick, especially at the bottom.

Isn't it incredible really that so many cob cottages have lasted so long?

today my husband and i traveled to ikea for bookshelves...and as far as we can see...a distinctive feature of pittsburgh is that EVERYONE goes to ikea on sundays....what a madhouse! and how happy they must be to have so much business....

A very mixed blessing IKEA (and I speak as a long-time customer). Such a loss of local distinctiveness with Swedish furniture everywhere from Pittsburgh to Hong Kong.....
