Simply..like saying grace....

It's the work of a minute to light a candle, place a few ptessed leaves ( they've been under the rug since last autumn) put a flower in a glass or otherwise decorate the table or tray for a meal.

I believe in it.

Even if just for one.

Adds joy.

Tastes better.

Makes me grateful.

Makes me smile.

As you say: like saying grace.....it is the act of reverence for this moment, and for all the simple gifts available to us for free....acknowledgement and gratitude.

How very French!
Making meals an occasion, reminds me of a photo (that I saw somewhere on the internet) of Parisian labourers, eating their lunch by their roadworks and van, from a foldout table with check cloth, proper plates and cutlery and a glass of wine.

And that reminds me of my elderly cousin, who was helping her “suddenly-single” son move into a new home, when she realized that the children would be coming home from school to a home with no tablecloth!!! And she was thinking how shocking this would be for them. So she sent her husband out immediately to get a tablecloth before the grands came home from school.

And three times a day - so nice.

What a help you are to us. This is such good practice, optimistic and self-caring.

The empty seat at the table still hurts, as you know.

Yes. I wish it was otherwise for you. Love, Susan

How right you are. Just got back from a w/e away and coming back to the emptiness is horrible.

Certainly makes a meal look very inviting and such a good practice when you are eating on your own it is so easy just to grab a bite and not think about serving it in a nice way. My MIL always ate at and laid the table as if she were having guests.

Such a good post, freda, that i am afraid i am chiming in a bit too much! But your comment, Viv, reminded me of my aunt. Her husband had dementia and she cared for him at home for 10 years. Candles, and the best china and silver every night for dinner..and she frequently took him out to the best restaurants...she just continued to live with grace.

What a wonderful attitude (and there's no such thing as chiming in too often Julia!)

It's also a chance to use and enjoy your nicest things.

I love that you do this, and I've loved all the stories in the comments too. Inspiring. I don't make enough effort for myself, I must remedy that.

It can just be the tiniest things so that they become habits rather than efforts. ;_)
