A 'Country Living' moment today. Too warm at 25 degrees to do anything much but drink more wine and eat more ice cream than I am used to. But, it's due to change tomorrow and dare I say it, I'm quite glad!

I'm not great in the heat - even our modest temperatures - and although it is pleasant to do very little for a day or two, there are things I want to do.

I know some of you are experiencing temperatures much higher - any tips on how to cope?

22° here in Paris as I write (5.30 am). We are expecting a high of 36° today. Everyone has been walking around with fans, bottles of water and cans of mineral water spray this week.

I am with you in the shade, Freda, though yesterday seemed very comfortable to me but that was because I am just home from a short holiday in Prague where the temperatures topped out at 38° on Wednesday. My friend and I were pleased to see that it wasn't just two peelie-wallie Scots who were seeking patches of shade and fanning themselves.
Looking for shade and fountains in the Senate Gardens we came across a free concert given by a wind band and it was such a pleasure to stop, sit down and listen till the end. An unexpected treat makes a much more intense memory for me and every time you go to post a letter, I'm sure, you will remember your surprise concert.

How lovely that you too had an unexpected treat of a concert Sheena! But 38 degrees. Oh my.

Oh, Freda! Do i have tips? Here in an eastern ontario summer, it can get up to over 40C with the humidex..once even 50C!. Try to only be outside between 6am and 9am, and then again after 4pm..at that time, shade only. Light-colored loose clothes, in cotton or linen. Try “melon-water”: soaking chunks of melon in water and drink that.
Also, if things get really hot, just wear your bathing suit and get yourself wet as often as necessary: shower or the loch! And let yourself air-dry. I run my wrists under cold water and hand a wet cloth around my neck or wear it on my head! a rotating light-weight tower fan can be taken from room to room with you.. and if you place a bowl of ice behind the fan, it will blow colder air on you. Talcum powder under arms and over neck and torso...i know! I’ve heard the connection to ovarian cancer.. but we are only talking your neck here, for a day or two.

Gosh Julia I'd hate not to be outside! Though a siesta mid-day is quite acceptable. I think I was meant to live in Scotland.

We have been poleaxed for a week in the Luberon with the temperatures topping 44C. No air con or fans but have made good use of the freezer. I dampen small towels, fold them and put them in the freezer. They make brilliant cold water bottles. Cooling by evaporation helps and moving as little as possible. Sad to be inside in darkened rooms because that’s what winter is for. But necessary. Not all bad though. We’ve eaten well and had an air conditioned car and a swimming pool!

Oh my! Today we had thunder lightening and heavy showers (it felt more normal!)

Lots of great tips above. I've discovered that it is also wise to check well in advance of hot weather that ones summer clothes still fit.....

Indeed Lotta! I'm having a slight problem with my wardrobe... Time to get a grip!

I'm finding all your tips, very helpful.
I'm keeping upstairs windows open at night, then opening all windows, when I wake until the air temperature rises (at about 0830) & closing curtains. Windows open again at dusk.
I read a book once, that mentioned 'the tyranny of a beautiful day': feeling obliged to be up and outside, having a wonderful active time. As a pale freckly red-haired Celt, I'm savouring enjoying myself peacefully indoors. But, like you, Freda, will be glad when it's cooler & have things to do.

That's good - 'the tyranny of a beautiful day'! As children we were told to be outside when the sun shone. I still feel obliged.

Great tips from everyone. Thank you all so much for sharing.

Ooh yes, it‘s been nearly 2 wks of 32-37 degrees celsius, far too hot for me (or the dog!) but life goes on... shutters/windows firmly closed between 8 am - 9 or 10 pm, windows wide open for cross ventilation all night, loose flowy clothes (I wore a swimsuit to go sailing and felt like I was sealed in a plastic bag, ugh, bad idea!!), hats always, cold wrist rinses, constant cool showers, linen duvet cover without the duvet, paddle box for the pup, lots of water, air-con in the car, plenty of stamina and belief that this, too, will pass... thunderstorms due in an hour and nothing over 30 for the next week. For the record, I wilt by the latest at 25 C... :O oh well.
