Simply..midgie!

No question of sitting out tonight - the warm moist still evening brings out the midgies by the million! I'm about to re-order my favoured midgie deterrent (different things work for different people). Alfresco is lovely - no parabens or deet, and a really nice perfume and moisturizer. A bit pricy I think, but does last for ages.

Do you have midgies or other biting insects where you are? One of the less attractive aspects of country living!

The worst thing here are the horseflies. They seem to love the shady dank area down by the river, but fly all over the garden when the sun is shining. They are sneaky, by the time you feel the bite they're almost done but the pain and then itchiness lasts for days.

Oh how annoying that they come out with the sun! At least the midgies hide when the sun shines. We do get the occasional horsefly here and I do react badly to their bite.

Not sure about midges, but the mosquitoes & may flies are fierce after dark. There's a bridge at the other end of the state (Pennsylvania) that had to close because the may flies were so dense cars were sliding & wrecking. That's a lot of may flies.

With one midgie, we call it 'mug'- in our bedroom last night I must not complain I see, compared to you, Rusty Duck and Cathy.

They definitely prefer some people to others - I remember on family holidays as a child my father and I were always bitten loads and my mother and brother had very few! Not sure how that works!!!

Body chemistry I'm told...Poor you and your father though! I was told when painting outside that smoking a cigarette kept them away - I tried it once. It didn't work. First and last cigarette!

I know it does put people off. Lots say that if it wasn't for the midgies it would be too crowded up here.....
