Simply..new energy?

Since I reached this last phase of clearing

Picture

I have some paintings in galleries, am coaching a small group of artists, have arranged for the muddy drive to be skimmed and gravelled, and made some exciting new travel plans....

I always suspected Marie Kondo would be right about this aspect.

The point is not to have a tidy house. The point is to make space for new ideas and things which rather than take up my energy, really give me energy.

Has this been your experience too?

Your comment about clearing stuff to make room for new activities and having the energy for new experiences struck a chord.
I can become weary just thinking about clutter and lie awake planning how to deal with it.
Thanks to your blog I am beginning the sifting process.
Other peoples' treasures will be my problem. Things I’ve inherited are a real drain on my space and emotional well-being. They have to go but it's very hard!

Inherited 'stuff'' is my problem as well. Since I mentioned this on here a while ago I've offered pieces to my sister and SIL, but they don't want anything - too much of their own to deal with and their children don't want any of it either. Giving away china that my mother used (when I don't remember her at all) seems so hard - what if I kept one or two pieces and then broke them? I would be gutted. I feel like I'm hanging on to memories that aren't even mine.

Oh this is clearly hard. You can keep it of course and think again in a year or so. Take some really nice photographs with tea in the cups and cakes on the plates then put it away again for a while. And as I said to Sue try Googling the topic and you might find some ideas that feel right to you Linda. Don't fret!

Linda, i am in my 60’s. I spent my adult life using, and caring for china that had been “other people’s”, or had been chosen by others for me! When i finally admitted to myself that it was all “stuff” that i would never have chosen for myself, and simply gave it to charity, what a relief! The love for, and memories of those people were not lodged in the objects. I am free to create a home for my true self. This is not to say i got rid of it all. But i got rid of everything that was not personally valuable to ME...i continue to do so and encourage you to take even some tiny steps into this freedom...:-)

I found donating, taking photographs and offering to other family members helpful but you might also try Googling' dealing with inherited stuff' for lots of different approaches to this difficult task.

Obviously as I am at the beginning, I can't say what clearing has yet done for me, but I'm thinking that once the list of 900 books is typed up and emailed to booksellers, the books and bookcases can go (so sadly) and the energy spent worrying about them can materialise as something more hopeful.

It strikes me that Marie Kondo's not just about tidying your house, as you say, she's also teaching resilience and adaptability and drive which are aspects of personal strength. Well done for leading the way in that.

I find a lot of wisdom in Marie Kondo's books. Sounds like you are doing a great job with those books!

I have been trying to put an answer to your question into words quite a few times already this evening. I somehow cannot find the words. Maybe it is too soon for me, possibly I am still too much in the process.

So I turn instead to what I can say, reading
'I have some paintings in galleries, am coaching a small group of artists, have arranged for the muddy drive to be skimmed and gravelled, and made some exciting new travel plans...'
moves me. Because I can sense the joy and the 'joie de vivre' in it. And also because I know that this is not the reward for clearing, this is because you cleared.

This is so fantastic, Freda! You are absolutely right..so was marie kondo...isn’t it a remarkable process? in reflection, i see that my life is taking some big turns. And also noticing that i’ve also been unconsciously winnowing relationships that are not sparking joy. More room what does! I wonder what direction art will take for you now...:-)
