For many years we were in the habit of creating North Points when we visited somewhere new but were never particularly systematic about recording them - but here are a few (and I must make a note to myself to keep up this little fun tradition starting with this mini one made of fallen fuchsia flowers today).

In a (Dutch) book I read last year, the author mentions 'stone-men'.
Small piles of stone pointing out the way to people walking in or climbing the mountains. A trail marker like a cairn or a breadcrumb.
Your variety I have never seen before and I love it/them.

Which brings me to another book for your reading project: Rebecca Solnit's A Field Guide to Getting Lost.

I love this idea Freda. It reminded me of when I used to visit the gardens of a local castle often with my family - there was a large stone sculpture of a foot in the woodland and we used to 'paint' its toenails with whatever petals or leaves had fallen... Magnolia petals were the best. It made people smile. (I still do it!)

Your delightful northpoints remind me of andy goldsworthy's equally ephemeral work...they are a celebration of our natural world, or our creativity, and wonder....ti love how they leave questions......thank you for that!

I also love that sometimes people add to them. Though I would never do that to an Andy Goldsworthy!

That's a lovely idea especially if it makes others smile and they add to it too. I am going to try that on our daily walk and see what happens!
