i saw my first swallowtail butterfly yesterday...robins building nests, and the peepers are singing every morning and evening. Primroses were bitten by last week's snow..:-(

Hi Freda, heard and then saw my first swallow in York yesterday. I don't expect to hear a cuckoo this year but will enjoy my memory of the cuckoos in the Outer Hebrides.

What about martins on the riverbank? Nothing here yet...

Saw my first swallow and house Martin yesterday both were skimming over the lake doing their aerobatics when we went for an early morning walk. I am always pleased to see their return.

It is wonderful when you see them back again.

I saw the bats flying at dusk yesterday just as the Robin hopped into cover from the bird feeder. The tadpoles are doing well in their new home. I had to move the spawn from a drying puddle!

A week and a half ago I saw my first butterfly of the season: a Small White, which we call 'Koolwitje' (Small Cabbage White).

Now I must go and do my homework and learn all about peepers, towhees and martins. I know a martin but he's human and not very good at aerobatics.

I'm going to have to look some things up too! The bees are back - one lot nesting in the wall of the house and another lot (very big and furry) going in and out of a hole in the workshop wall. Tiny new hazel leaves unfurling over the weekend, and I saw a Small Tortoiseshell on the hill. And someone is making a lot of noise above my bedroom window - I hope it's a sparrow nesting and not mice!

Are you OK with the bees nesting in your house walls?!

Yes, they've been doing it for the last few years! From what I've read they don't do any damage to the house and I haven't been stung by them yet... Wasps would be a different matter!

I have lots of your post to catch with! We saw our first swallow last weekend and have our first cowslip coming out in the garden. Sarah x

This morning I couldn't think of any firsts, but when I came home from work tonight, my husband said a hummingbird was at our kitchen window looking for our feeders. The birds come from South America (we live by the Chesapeake Bay) every year. We've have kept multiple hummigbird feeders (sugar water) on our deck for years--spring to late fall--and the hummies return each year. We even recognize some of them. If you don't know much about them, I encourage you to read about them. Their journey from South America is an amazing feat of nature.

We have the same (we think) swallows nest each year - such a thrill - they come from Atrica. I will look up humming birds. Nature is fascinating

My first was a greater spotted woodpecker visiting our nuts on Saturday! We'd moved them further around our beech tree , so maybe being a few feet further from the house did the trick!the beech tree also has its first leaves out, just on one of its smaller branches, the rest are in tight bud. It's a beautiful tree to watch every spring. The leaves unfurl as the day goes on, a bit like time-lapse photography in real time.

I've not seen one yet this year, but have heard one. I once had a beech branch in a vase which opened up its opposite lime green leaves in the warmth of the house - they looked like butterflies. I've never managed to get the effect again. Your tree sounds wonderful Penny.
