..my mother on Mother's Day.  My sister made a small repair on the beautiful Shetland shawl knitted by our Mum. It was knitted in one ply wool so fine it could be pulled through a wedding ring. She also knitted Aran and Fair Isle patterns.

That is such a treasure. I think Shetland lace knitting is fascinating and so beautiful. Although I enjoy knitting as a hobby , I have never mastered lace knitting . I'd love to visit Shetland and attend Wool Week but have followed it online for the last few years. Your Mum was a talented knitter Freda.

How absolutely lovely.
And how skilled, focussed and patient, your mother must have been.
Lovely to see your sister conserving it.

I add this link, in case it is of interest to knitters.
(I am not, but find the images and intention of this company, inspiring).
It is a business, set up by a young academic, when she had to cease work for medical reasons, and wished to preserve the skills and knowledge of knitting traditional Scottish garments. (I've no affiliation).
I think ' you might like the colours she uses, Freda.

That will be Kate Davies, Susan? I am trying to improve my knitting skills and am currently working on a small colourwork project designed by her (the Pochie - it's a hot water bottle cover).

Yes I also thought you must mean Kate Davies . Her designs are gorgeous , a sort of modern traditional. I find her patterns quite complex but worth the effort ! Her blog is interesting too.

Yes, Grace and Mary B, that is her: a click on the arrow, will take you there.
(Also, I meant ... that I'm not a knitter rather than I'm not interested.
I did knit a very holey purse and a skew-wiff doll with long dangly stripy legs, for a Brownies' badge but that was the pinnacle of my knitting achievements.)

In addition to all her knitting books, Kate Davies also wrote an excellent book about her experience of suffering a stroke when in her 30s. It is called Handywoman.

Just discovered that there is a live webcast on Shetland webcams starting tomorrow middayish , celebrating Shetland lace knitting . Don't know anymore about it but thought you might be interested.
