Such a beautiful heirloom.
That is such a treasure. I think Shetland lace knitting is fascinating and so beautiful. Although I enjoy knitting as a hobby , I have never mastered lace knitting . I'd love to visit Shetland and attend Wool Week but have followed it online for the last few years. Your Mum was a talented knitter Freda.
How absolutely lovely.
And how skilled, focussed and patient, your mother must have been.
Lovely to see your sister conserving it.
I add this link, in case it is of interest to knitters.
(I am not, but find the images and intention of this company, inspiring).
It is a business, set up by a young academic, when she had to cease work for medical reasons, and wished to preserve the skills and knowledge of knitting traditional Scottish garments. (I've no affiliation).
I think ' you might like the colours she uses, Freda.
That will be Kate Davies, Susan? I am trying to improve my knitting skills and am currently working on a small colourwork project designed by her (the Pochie - it's a hot water bottle cover).
Yes I also thought you must mean Kate Davies . Her designs are gorgeous , a sort of modern traditional. I find her patterns quite complex but worth the effort ! Her blog is interesting too.
Yes, Grace and Mary B, that is her: a click on the arrow, will take you there.
(Also, I meant ... that I'm not a knitter rather than I'm not interested.
I did knit a very holey purse and a skew-wiff doll with long dangly stripy legs, for a Brownies' badge but that was the pinnacle of my knitting achievements.)
Susan , they say all knitting is good knitting ☺️
i'm also a knitter but your mother's shawl is beyond my talents. simply gorgeous & what a treasure. meet you in the shetlands one day, mary b!
Wouldn't that be fun !
it certainly would be.
In addition to all her knitting books, Kate Davies also wrote an excellent book about her experience of suffering a stroke when in her 30s. It is called Handywoman.
Just discovered that there is a live webcast on Shetland webcams starting tomorrow middayish , celebrating Shetland lace knitting . Don't know anymore about it but thought you might be interested.
fingers crossed my schedule will allow me to watch. appointments in the morning. grrrr.
Thank you all so much for your lovely comments and interesting links and ideas. I love it when you talk to each other here!
Is good to know you like us talking to each other. I didn’t know if we were supposed to since it is your blog.
I really do think of it as our blog and hope you do too!
How clever! That is so beautiful.
