Thirteen Ways Of Looking At Rain: Two
Picture

If you watched the video about the work of Saul Leiter on yesterday's post you will see the influence already!  I have watched the trailer about six times and am very tempted to buy the DVD.

Instead of waking up, looking out of the window and groaning because it is raining, I think instead 'I wonder how I can photograph the rain today?' - and it does get me out of the door, which is good...

Today's rain is so fine you cannot see it or hear it. You can feel it, just, on your skin, and see how it has collected on surfaces like the glass of the greenhouse.

In Scotland we call it smirr. See here for a lovely explanation.

Saul Leiter says he is the kind of person who 'likes to postpone things', and in the city yesterday I saw this sign -

Procaffeination - the tendency to put things off until you've had a cup of coffee.

Like it?

ps...love the word smirr!!...we do not have smirr in west virginia....we have heaping buckets of big raindrops that come straight down...we rarely have a big wind with the rain.

We often have big winds with our rain - that will be a challenge to photograph!

Here we call is mizzle - a cross between mist and drizzle but smirr is a canny word. The weather here is divine at the moment with no chance of capturing raindrops - and you know, I don't mind one bit about that.

I loved that clip yesterday- an old man going out everyday with his camera finding incredible shots - gives you something to get out of bed for.

Glad it's not mizzling where you are and that you loved the clip Elaine.

I find witnessing the process of your Thirteen Ways Of Looking At Rain project fascinating and photograph Two beautiful, it has the quality of a threshold to me. Tomorrow I want to come back to investigate the influence of Saul Leiter.

I have been enjoying your theme this week.I have been so busy I have had the fun of reading 7 posts all in one go! Lovely red leaves against the water! The inspirational addition of colour in your's and Saul's images are fantastic. I hate the clocks turning back too! Sarah x
