Simply..who do you listen to?

Apart from BBC Radio 3 (sanity in a mad world!) I've been listening to Hans Rosling on How Not To Be Ignorant In The World, Seth Godin on the subject of Cable news and Elizabeth Gilbert's Thoughts On Writing.

Have you any recommendations of people/websites/blogs/magazines/books/programmes with something interesting to say?

And that you trust?

Big Hans Rosling fans here :)

We're in the middle of "Silk Roads", which is fascinating and could take a while because I have to keep looking things up and getting lost in the rabbit holes of geography and history! (Peter Frankopan) The title is (in my opinion) misleading - it's about the east's history, and that s on the end of road is the clue, it's not about THE silk road as such.
We are so ignorant of non-western history I regularly feel I should blush. My eyes were opened to this huge gaping hole in my knowledge when I read Ella Maillart's The Cruel Way and Patrick Leigh Fermore's books on his walk to Istanbul/Constantinople and I still feel a bit ashamed I ever even remotely thought of myself as an historian.

I enjoyed Lucy Wood's "Weathering" and Sarah Winman's "A Year of Marvellous Ways" this summer, and then am also trying to kid myself I understand Melanie Windridge's "Aurora: In Search of the Northern Lights", which is pretty scientific but extremely interesting - one of my ambitions is to see the aurora borealis :).

I also listen to BBC Radio 4 quite a lot, mostly on iPlayer where I can pick what I want to listen to rather than have it murmuring along plaintively in the background - as I get older, I can no longer tolerate much background noise... Anyway, there are some really fascinating tidbits that come up on there in smaller bites than listening to a whole audiobook!

(Can I also say, anything by Alexander McCall-Smith is a must for me?! Just delicious.)

Thank you so much Swiss Rose for all these interesting things to follow up (mostly new to me except for Patrick Leigh Fermor). Radio Four Pick of the Week is a good catch up...
