Today I found in one of the meadow areas for the first time caterpillars of the very beautiful Cinnabar moth.
Have you spotted anything new to you around where you live?
The garden is getting wilder (by which I mean more dishevelled!) but that very state, I like to think, is encouraging more wildlife. Today I found in one of the meadow areas for the first time caterpillars of the very beautiful Cinnabar moth. The Cinnabar moth is not a rarity, and ragwort, it's favoured food is plentiful around here, but I have only seen one once. Perhaps my decision to pay more attention to the bitds and insects in my garden this year is paying off.
Have you spotted anything new to you around where you live?

I see more (lots more)dragonflies and hummingbirds than usual. They love my zinnias and black eyed Susan’s. But those insects that look like hummingbirds, i’ve seen none. I just sit on my front porch glider and watch all the pollinator activity

it's amazing what we see when we slow down, isn't it?

What fun to play with a squirrel! I once watched a blackbird and a squirrel chase each other round and round a tree - they must have a sense of fun I think.

I remember seeing lots of Cinnabar moths and caterpillars as a child, but not so many in recent years despite the unkempt wildness in my garden. I do wonder though if it's because I was a lot closer to the ground then and I'm just not rummaging through the undergrowth in the same way now. Lots of interesting little beetles keep appearing here at the moment... colourful, metallic... no idea what they are but I like them!

That closeness to the ground is one of the nice things about hand weeding..

Two large Does and three baby deer feeding in my backyard yesterday (our dog thinks they are just large doggies). Hummingbirds--returnees each summer--pretending to be Spitfires in combat--fighting over the feeder at the kitchen window, off and on all day.

Yes! Vine weevil grubs in some bags of compost I have brought into my new garden and who are now happily playing with the radishes - my first crop here...sob...in one of the beds.

My bats have returned for their 2nd roost of the season, under my fascia-board. They chirrup away in the evenings, and swoop out from their roost at dusk.

Growling a sobbing and laughing - our feelings about nature are very mixed aren't they!

My sister has a saying that we go to nature to find peace and serenity; and then we immediately try to tame away the parts we don’t like! We’ve had a fair share of unlikeable pests lately! My husband has contracted lymes disease from a tick bite, there were nightly mice parties in the ceiling of my sister’s rural home, and ravens looking to capture the chickens, and now our granddaughter has come home from a sleepover with lice! Oh the underbelly of the natural world! Meanwhile, the sun still gets up every morning and shines..:-)
